R style Engine grill opinions wanted

i had some fun today with a grill that had bent and missing bars, but perfect wire mesh underneath. i did a bit of cutting, grinding and cleaning up to modify it into an 911 R style grill. Thanks to Bob Tilton and John Thornton for inspiration..

    my Stock good grill.

the new modified R style grill

note.. this is just a mock up.. needs a little better fitting/bending, and also needs to be bolted to the deck lid.. this is just taped and mocked.. NOT final mounting.

    1) what do you guys think? to R or not to R that is the question?

    2) if i R do i paint it black as typical to R cars, or silver to match the trim? i think grey or silver would be better suited for a dark colored car like burgundy myself.. what do you think?

    thanks

    Harry

Boy, Harry, you're having some fun in that garage, aren't you?! I'd paint it black if you decide to keep it. Personally, I prefer the expanded metal "on top" of the lid, i.e.; mounted like the stock grill. But it's your car and looks like you're having fun, so carry on!

yeah, thats what i cant figure out...

my g/f says it looks unfinished with the empty space where the grill sat. she is kind of right.. but i do like this look.

still not sure which way to go..

Well, to me, this look, painted black gives an edgy, privateer-racer look which is great. But, I'm not sure that jives with the Cibies you just mounted on the front end. IMO, a screen that is mounted topside ala' Milou's ST would look a little more refineed and is a better with the Cibies. But as always, have fun!

For comparison, I've got black mesh against a dark colour on my rally car - with chrome fasteners and chrome R hinges.

I also like the mounted underneath look.

    slightly different approach, similar result

I've been trying to un-update a lot of the blacked-out trim my car had, looked to 80's, especially against the dark midnight blue (often confused with black) paint.....so, instead of the black grille, I got some stainless mesh from pegasus, did the front RS grille and the rear.

I think that a car has to have a very clear "race-car" theme going in order to pull the light engine grill look off.

My inclination is to stick with the stock.

BTW, have you lowered that thing yet?

Thanks Dave, I think youre right. That along with the fact that most TR's (my inspiration) have a stock grill too.

I have been spending all my fun money this year on some home rehab projects, so i havent been able to afford to get the suspension bushings replaced. Thats the big reason i have been doing a bunch of smaller projects like this.
