    To All ’66 and ’67 Owners…

    Guys,

I’m trying to determine when (VIN range) Porsche changed the internal glove box door upholstery from 3 horizontal elastic straps to 2 vertical straps. I believe this changeover occurred somewhere between the 1966 and 1967 model years.

    Attachment 91716

    Attachment 91717

To do this we need to take a survey of as many MY 1966 and 1967 cars as possible. Can the owners ’66 and ’67 cars post which style of upholstery (3 or 2 strap) is in their 911/912 glove box along with the corresponding VIN?

We already have some info to get the ball rolling from the 900 series glycerin bottle thread: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=34608

    1. JackG states in posts #18 and #28 that his ’66 912 had glove box straps. He doesn’t mention the VIN but he does indicate that he had the 3 horizontal elastic straps.

    2. cliffandropoff states in post #31 that his ‘late, late 66 sold as a 67 deluxe’ (304863) has the three horizontal elastic straps.

    3. A friend emailed me to say that his 2 ’66 cars have 3 three horizontal elastic straps. His ’67 (307089) has 2 straps.

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.

It appears that the liner changed when the latch changed from center to the side for the 67 model.

It's beginning to look like those two aspects are related.

So far the two cars with the closest VIN's and different straps are Cliff's '304863' and Raj's '305504'.

I was reading these two threads last night:

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=24445

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=25294

The early SWB era seems to be a murky mess of VINs, production dates and model years! From what I'm reading the last 1966 MY VIN was '304949' and 1967 MY VIN's started with '305101S'. So there are really only 489 cars between these two. Are there any cars on the board that fall in between the VIN range of these two cars?

It also seems that they started making 1967 MY cars before ending the 1966 MY's. Do I have that right? If that's the case I suspect a number if '67 cars have 3 horizontal straps in their glove boxes.

We believe that you are correct in the last 1966 built was 304949 or thereabouts (some talk of # 304955), and that the first 1967 was 305101. We also believe that 1967 production began in May, thus requiring a sizable gap in the numbers to allow 1966 production to continue concurrent with 1967 models. The final gap of 145 were cars that were not built. Since the late 1966 cars (also called 1967 deluxe) had the single strap/triple loop and the 1967 cars listed so far had the double strap, I think it most likely that few if any 1966 models had the double strap, and possibly only a few of the early 1967 models would have the single strap/triple loop.
