    Gearbox type info' require

HI is there any one with gearbox type No's, apart from the usual OPC manual and Spec' book, as I have in a 68 box with 901/05 on the case, would like to Know what that type No' relates to, with a date mark of 15/68 and a Ally box?

    thanks, regards mike

    Mike,

I’m not sure I completely understand your question.

What is the transmission number on the bottom rib with the type number?

    Are you sure it isn’t a 902/05? That is a normal 912 5-speed.

    How is it configured?
    What axle flanges?
    What gears?
What are the dates and S/Ns on the gears?

Based on the date code, the casting is from the week of April 8-13, 1968. That probably makes the installation in a ’68 model built prior to the end of production in July.

That is not to say it wasn’t for a ’69 model with the aluminum casting.

    Best,
    Grady

901/05 has serial numbers starting 3282001, and I have as high as 3282674, so it is a 1968 MY transmission.
I do need to know the serial # on your case.
Some photographs would be very useful to document this rare type. What are the casting numbers on the case parts?

According to Tony Proasi on Pelican it has ratios A F M S X, so a pretty standard gearset.

    HI All
thanks for the reply, the box is in for repair due to the side plate leaking oil,
the box No' is 3282270, also has ratios; 1St A, 2Nd 16:35, 3Rd J, 4Th N, 5Th S, with a 7:31 CWP, the 2Nd is a after market one to go with the 904 input shaft, and the output flanges are for the ZF LSD as in the last photo,

    regards mike

Thanks very much. It does sound like the gearset is not the original anymore.

It's not possible that the number is 901/95? The reason I ask is that I know
of someone with a very trick factory gearbox which has type 901/90. I have
seen no reference to a 901/90 type in the tech specs or anywhere else.

I asked this question back in 2006

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...light=901%2F05

The answer, it appears, is found in the serial number.
The serial number for these boxes start with 328XXXX.
The "3" means it belongs to a 130HP 'six' (the L in 1968)
The "2" means it is a 5 speed box.
The "8" is the date code for 1968.

There was a 2nd hand comment that the 901/05 was a customer special order code. My guess is that as the 1968 911L came with a 4 speed normally, then if an optional 5 speed was ordered, it got a 901/05 code. But this is a unconfirmed guess. I've also seen a mention of a 911L Rally spec with a tricked up 901/05.

I think that Grady Clay mentioned that there were 17 varieties of 1968 transmissions. I don't have a complete list myself, but I'm working on it. The serial #'s can begin with 1, 2, 3, 4, 9. The second digit can be 0, 1, or 2. The fourth digit is sometines used for a subseries. I have:
    902/01 1080001
    902/02 1280001
    901/10 2080001
    901/03 2280001
    902/0 3080001
    905/00 3180001
    902/1 3280001
    901/05 3282001
    90X/** 4080001
    905/01 4180001
    901/02 4280001
    901/50 9280001
    901/51 9281001
    901/52 9282001
    901/53 9283001
    901/54 9284001
    901/90 9282001
