    Storing cams and crank

After a bit of searching around through different forums there seems to be a consensus that cranks and cams should be stored standing up rather than laying down. So i thought to achieve this and keep the cams/crank in good nick that i would use some 50mm waste pipe , glue / seal an end cap on one end , insert the cam in to the pipe , fill with oil and cap the open end . ( same for crank but use 150mm pipe ). strap all three together and stand up in storage.
My theory being that the pipe is suppling external protection to the items and acting as a oil storage device which in turn is stopping any oxygen getting to the cam/crank and so removing any change of pitting / corrosion.

So is this idea sound or over kill?

I believe you should use some oil with low detergents (Na, Ca, Mg). I have heard if you let oil sit in your sump for long periods, that can cause corrosion. Check me on that, though.

Who is worried that the crank or cams will bend if stored horizontally?

I would be really worried about R U S T, so I would spray them with cosmoline, really lay it on thick. Better than oil because it won't drip off. Wrap them in waxed paper and put them on the shelf.

The real trouble with long term storage. . . remembering where the hell you put things. . . I swear when I inventory all the stuff I have in storage there will be a couple 911s worth of parts in there. . .
