    911 engine case Revisions

I've done a little bit of research on the casting part numbers found on the case halves of the 911 engine. As time went on the original number changed as the case design was modified. So, I want to try and document these changes. Naturally I will require help from you to try and determine all of the combinations and the range of build #'s or engine serial #'s to which the combination applies. The build #'s make it easy for most of the 2.0 engines since it has a linear progression with time. There are exceptions for the guidelines. For example I know of a few magnesium cases that preceded the introduction of the new design in volume production. Also, there were aluminum cases made for racing purposes that apparently use the same dies as the late magnesium case.

A change to the left half of the case somewhere about build 5200; seems to be coincident with the new type 901/02 911S engine introduction.

Perhaps a minor change occurs about build 9200 with the introduction of the 1968 model year production, and the chain housings change from 3 fasteners and 2 solid dowels to have 5 threaded fasteners.

This is the third version of the aluminum 901 case, beginning about build 9730, perhaps earlier.
This, the first of the "R" cases was short lived with about 2000 to 3000 produced.
Doing a bit of research indicates that most people with this case find they are not numbered; replacement cases.

The first Magnesium case from build #'s near 12100, although build 11474 is one of a few prototype engines built to test the new design before volume production.

Both case halves changed, was this done in unison?
