Thread: Are factory horn grills black on the back side?

Are factory horn grills black on the back side?

I have a couple sets that have black paint on the back side of the bars. Was this done coincidentally by later owners, or did the factory do this to stop reflections of the bottom of the upper bars on the top of the lower ones?

Won't be hard to paint my rechromed ones black but I want to be sure before I scuff the back side with sandpaper.

Thanks! If anyone has a photo that would be much appreciated.

All the '73 (they should all be black that year, '72 were chrome however) grills I've seen are black plastic.

I have a set of NOS chrome TTGs. They are not painted black on the reverse side. Chrome all over.

Nope, no paint on the backside. I've had a lot of these, including now SWB and LWB, no paint on the backside. I've also pulled original 4 screw grills off of a car, and no black paint on the backside.

Thanks guys. I don't know why I have two sets that were painted black, maybe some prior owner. I appreciate the info based on original cars and NOS sets.
