Thread: Bolt nomenclature?

  1. #1

    Bolt nomenclature?

I have about ten socket head bolts and washers that attach the seat support to the car. I don't know what this are called, are they called M4, M5, or M6 hexbolts, does any one know the size and how one describes these bolts and washers. I was looking at Eagleday.com to purchase a set of yellow zinc plated bolts and washers.

    Thanks.

The bolts that attach the seat support to the car should be 6mm X 1.0 mm thread pitch allen head bolts. The allen head should use a 5mm wrench. HTH's

Thanks for your reply. Did you mean 6mm x 10mm as I could not find 1mm?

Also has anyone had experience in purchasing hardware from eagleday.com?

    Thank you.

I just took a quick look @ their site, they do not describe correctly in some places you have to dig. Ed gave you the correct bolt size/pitch since you have 10 measure one from the tip of bolt to bottom of the allen head that will be the length, they call them "socket heads" same thing as hex head.

Tried to edit out double Ed would not, system glitch.

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.
But after that moment you are on your own and nobody owes you a damn thing.

I find this web site to be helpful as you can drill down to specific types.

As Ed says 1.0 mm is the pitch.

There are typically 3 different thread pitches available in Metric Fastenere.

    Ultra Fine, Fine and Coarse.

The pitch varies with diameter and it convention that when a fastener supplier doesn't quote the pitch they will supply a coarse thread.

If you order without specifying the pitch they will also deliver a coarse thread.

As Ed also states the length of a cap head is specified as from under the head to the end of the thread.

The only time this doesn't work is for Countersunk Cap Heads (CSK) when total length is used.

Some of the cap heads used on door and window frames are also unusual as they have a 'low head' design. There are two DIN Standards for low head cap screws and the head depth is slightly different for both types.

You beat me to it.. I always ask Porsche if they are still available. When I was in parts we carried every bolt size on the cars..and they were usually less than outside sources..sometimes even the same as original.
