    Oil cooling serpentine

What year did Porsche start with the oil cooling serpentine on the right hand side of the car?
Did Porsche start building all the cars from a certain year on with this oil cooling serpentine or was it only on the higher performance cars (S'ses)?
Apart from the racing cars such as the 1967 911 R and the ST's (2.3 and 2.5 liter) did other early cars have oil coolers in the front right (and or left) fender, and if so in what production year?
Looking forward to the unmistakable knowledge on this forum.
    Thanks,
    JD

I might be wrong, but I think JD is asking what year the external oil cooling system was offered on production 911s......... yes?

If so, I believe the system started with the '69 production year with an optional front small radiator type cooler w/small stub-line fittings until the '71 MY. Then for '72 they had the same optional small radiator cooler however they changed to the bigger stub-line fittings (making this a one year only cooler). For the '73 MY they changed to the serpentine/trombone optional cooler with the bigger stub-line fittings. The hard lines and thermostat placement changed as well, I believe 3 times until the '74 MY where they settled on the hard line and thermostat location for about the next 25 years.

Hope this helps and answers your question.

    Cheers

You probably right Chuck, in French we usually call the 73 front oil cooler "serpentin" ...

    Thanks guys.
So in 1969 they had a smal cooler. Does anybody have any pictures of this setup?
If i do understand it rightly a 1968 car would not have the external lining (right hand side) to the front. Thus a 1968 car would not have the brackets, nor the holes where the external lining was fitted to the bottom of the bodywork?

As Chuck stated the 69 S was the first production 911 to come with a front cooler as standard. This continued through the 72S cars. In 73 the front cooler was no longer standard fitted, but was an option. The 69 through 72 cars had a tube and fin cooler similar in appearance to a normal radiator. In 73 this was changed to the serpentine/trombone cooler. This was done, at least in part, due to the tube and fin style getting filled up with road salt and rusting out, something less likely to happen with the more open trombone type. There were 3 oil thermostat setups, 69-71 used a thermostat in the engine bay, 72 used a thermostat in the oil filter housing, and the 73 thermostat was threaded onto the oil tank. In 69-71 the oil lines went through the rocker panel, 72 on they were routed externally. Staring in 74 the oil line and thermostat arrangement finally stabilized for the remainder of the air cooled run. 67 and 68 production S's did not have front coolers, factory built race /rally cars did however. The 911R did have front coolers, one in each fender and I believe the lines were run through the rockers, but could be wrong on that. I know I have seen below rocker oil lines on 67/68 race/rally cars that were below the rockers, but those most likely were installed after the car was built since there would be no way to get them in the rockers then. Hope this helps clear things up for you.

raj , i was going to ask this on a separate thread but may as well ask it here . the rsr in the museum has trombone cooler for engine and trans (rhs and lhs ). being a 2.8ltr engine and raced it seems the factory found these quite suitable or they would have run core radiator styles (aka "s" ) . if you are running in a not so hot country ( temp never over 32c) with a 2.5ltr would two of these in the car (aka 911r style) be more than suitable?
