    Refreshed/Restored Numbers-matching 1970 Porsche 911E Coupe with MFI

Car is sold, thanks for the inquiries.

This is a numbers matching 1970 911E Coupe, VIN 9110200101 with matching original engine no. 6200637, complete with MFI, sympathetically refreshed and restored to an original standard. COA indicates that the car was originally light grey, and was optioned with US Equipment, Antenna Left, w/Loudspeaker & Noise Suppression and Tinted Glass All Around. I purchased this car in 2009 from a long term owner in Oklahoma, after he decided not to complete a restoration that had been started many years earlier. When I bought the car, it was disassembled, needing glass, body panels and numerous other non-mechanical components to be installed, as well as related mechanical work to bring the car back to life after a long slumber. This is now a very nice, high quality driver level car that can be enjoyed immediately.

    Background
The Prior Owner claimed to have owned the car for approximately 25 years, & told me that he had started a restoration about 15 years ago. PO claimed that the car was stripped to bare metal and all glass was removed for the repaint, and that the motor was rebuilt at a cost of $7,000 in parts plus a 914 in trade, using all new Porsche parts back to E spec (he was very emphatic about this when I asked him if any ‘S’ components were used). The car then sat in his garage awaiting completion. I have no evidence or history to verify anything that I was told, but the photos of the car and condition when I purchased it are consistent with the long-term dry storage, and the motor sounds and runs very well with no smoke. Before selling the car to me, the PO had the car taken to a Porsche specialist near him to determine what it would take to awaken the car from its state of suspended animation (a copy of the invoice from the shop in Oklahoma is available).

    Body & Exterior
The PO indicated that the car was a California car when he originally purchased it. I have inspected the car thoroughly as we have brought it back to life and haven’t found any evidence of prior rust or accident damage. The only sheet metal issue was a tear in the driver’s side floor pan approximately two feet long and approximately an inch wide. According to the PO, the floor was damaged when pulling the car onto a trailer. The tear was a relatively clean cut, and was patched by Kevin at AIR. The floors, rockers, headlight buckets, jack points, doors, jambs, pillars and torsion tubes all appear free of rust, and I welcome a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified technician. The front tow hook and surrounding area looks like it was damaged at some point, but I have not replaced it. The original undercoating is intact most of the underside of the floor, except where the tear was. Car was originally light grey, but the color change was well executed, as I can find very little evidence of the original color except under some interior trim and a few other spots. I would guess that the paint is now 10 - 15 years old and it still looks to be in good shape, which attests to the quality of the job that was done at that time. There are, however, a number of defects (mostly nicks and scratches) from wear and storage, which are evident upon closer inspection, and there is a small dent in the front passenger fender near the antenna where something looks like it fell on the car while in the PO’s garage for many years. I have not repaired this small dent so prospective purchasers can evaluate the paint directly. All exterior trim is correct, shiny, pretty straight and mostly original, with some patina but in very nice condition. Fogs are not Hella. I had the front & rear trunk latches re-plated and installed new hood and decklid shocks.

    Interior
The interior of the car is restored to an original standard and is in overall very good condition. Glass is free of any major defects or scratches, with new seals throughout. The dash and removable speaker grill have not been recovered and are in very good condition with a small crack at the weak spot forward of the speaker grill and a small crack forward of the defrost vent on the driver side. Instruments are in very nice condition with the correct E tachometer, and a sometimes functioning clock. The speedo works, and the trip meter resets, but the odometer doesn’t seem to be working (car is sold TMU/exceeds mechanical limits). An original period correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio is installed (lights up but not working) along with a new Hirschmann antenna, and all dash trim is in very good shape. The kneepads have been recovered in German vinyl. The front seats are in very good shape, with supple German vinyl bolsters and back and basket weave vinyl inserts, and have been recently re-padded. The seat tracks have been powder coated and the sliders have been cleaned and lubed, and look excellent. Rear seats are likely original. Carpet is a new replacement cut loop style in dark grey and looks fantastic. Sun visors and headliner are good, with the slightest amount of puffiness to the visors and very modest discoloration (glue bleed) at some of the edges of the headliner and a small wrinkle near the rear passenger quarter window. The rear parcel shelf has been recovered, and looks perfect. The interior doors are complete and in very good shape, with no speaker cutouts. I have replaced the door pockets with four from my collection, and while not perfect, I would say that they look better than 90% of the LWB cars I have seen. Door pulls are in good shape, and with the pockets and undamaged panels, the doors really look fantastic and very original. Steering wheel appears to be recovered in leather and is very nice, with no tears or loose threads. Overall, the interior presents very very well, maintaining a very original feel and enough patina that one feels invited to touch, sense and drive the car, but it is not over-restored.

    Mechanical
The car retains its original numbers matching engine with MFI and what is believed to be the original matching 901 5-speed transmission (COA does not provide the transmission number or type, indicating that the information is not available, but there is no reason to believe that this has been replaced). When the PO took the car to the Porsche specialist, a leakdown test was performed and all cylinders were noted at 5% (this is very impressive to me inasmuch as the motor probably hadn’t been run in 10+ years). As noted above, I have a copy of the work order. In addition to the leakdown, they did start the car and diagnose a few needs, including a starter, fuel pump, ignition switch and fuel level sender. The mechanical items noted in the estimate in order to get the car running properly have been addressed. Specifically, I have replaced the fuel tank and replaced the alternator, regulator, starter, electric fuel pump (with a correct and expensive Bosch pump), ignition switch, fuel sender and various gaskets, bushings, lines and filters. We have lubed all the throttle linkages, and tried to go through and clean all the “sticky” parts. All worn suspension bushings have been replaced, and brakes front and rear have been rebuilt and new lines installed. The car has a Perma-tune module in place of the original CDI. A new correct 2.2E owner’s manual for the car is included. The car still maintains dual batteries, and has two brand new Interstate U911 batteries installed. The MFI was tuned, and several other items attended to by TRE Motorsports, at a cost of nearly $2000 (car is still at TRE as of the time of this posting, but will be picked up this week). The car starts right up without a hint of smoke and quickly settles into a smooth idle. The car drives very well. The 2.2E motor is complete and correct, and produces good power throughout the power band. The 901 gearbox is presumed to be original to the car, but the COA does not have the transmission number, indicating only “Information Not Available.” The gearbox synchros seem pretty good, but admittedly I haven’t driven the car too aggressively. Clutch is good and exhibits no slippage.

I originally intended to keep this car, and work was done with this in mind, but I've decided to continue thinning the herd a bit to focus on a 72S and my race car project which has languished. Car offered here before going to other sites. Car is currently titled in Oklahoma, and the title is in my possession. The blue plate shown in some of the photos does not belong to the car, and does not come with it. Please PM me and I can provide a phone number for any questions. Numerous additional photos available. Thanks

This description is solely for convenience, and is not part of any contract of sale for the vehicle. My description is my opinion only, and should not be considered a complete description of any or all faults, and may not be relied upon, taken as fact or otherwise considered a representation or warranty or any sort. The car is sold as-is, where-is with all faults known or unknown. These should only be considered the ramblings of a guy who likes old Porsches. Please see the car in person or send a representative for inspection. A pre-purchase inspection is strongly encouraged and I can happily take the car to one of the well-known nearby shops if you organize and pay for a PPI. Remember, this is a 40 year old car that has been used; it is not showroom new. If you have ever had an old Porsche, or you are considering owning one, you should understand that there is an almost endless list of repairs, improvements, corrections and details that can be attended to. Like the car, I am old too, so I may have forgotten things that are important to you. That’s why you should send someone to inspect this or any car you are considering purchasing. I apologize for this lawyerly disclaimer, but we live in strange times.

I'm sorry if I have not responded to any emails or PM's regarding the car. I was dealing with a family issue, and so the sale of the car fell to the bottom of the priority list. I have retrieved the car from TRE, where the MFI was tuned and several other items have been attended to. Photos of the car, including underside, engine and trunk, are posted here:
