Exclamation Horn contact(?) problem with 380mm steering wheel

I recently picked up one of Dr 911E's very nice "thick grip" 380mm steering wheels, part #914 347 804 10. It's already been prepared to accept the 911 turn signal cancellation ring and I want to use the "butterfly" horn pad from my original 400mm wheel.

The problem I'm running into is that now that the wheel is installed, the horn will work without the horn pad but won't once the pad is in place. Can anyone please advise? Is it simply a matter of replacing the existing horn contact or contact pin? I've searched on topic but don't see any discussion on point; will search again and revise this post if I do.

    Thanks,
    Ed

I wish I could help....I use the stock horn butterfly on one of Dr 911E's 380mm double wraps, and had no problems....this on my '69 S.

any chance the butterfly is upside down or something?

Sorry, you're having a problem. I really have no idea, actually. You could try your old wheel-set up if that works then it is really strange. You do need a good contact, of course, and your horn relay/and horns need to work well. If after verifying your old wheel and set up works OK, the only thing I can think of is a. the horn contact pin or something wrong with the butterfly (check the rubber "spring" is good and the butterfly hub contacts are OK)

    maybe a picture would help.

i sounds like Ed has used a screwdriver or something to short the horn contact against the wheel, and that indeed makes the horn work, yet once the butterfly is on, no amount of pushing makes the horn blow....to me, that could lead to the diagnosis that the butterfly is not making the connection from the horn contact to ground, that is otherwise made by the screwdriver.....and the same butterfly is able to make the horn blow on the original wheel.

I'm missing something here, it seems well diagnosed and nothing seems to add up....

Gentlemen: Horn contact pin was the culprit. All is well and I'll snap a pic when I get the chance.

    Thanks,

May I make a self-promoting link over on the FS site; Here's another nice one.
