    Carrera Panamericana

The wild-West revival of the Mexican Road Race was contested last week and the rules allowed several long-hoods into the field (Mexico still seems to follow the "Golden Rule": if you have Gold, you Rule). Of course, 911's never contested the original Carrera Panamericana from 1950-1954, but Porsche's 1953 win with a 550 in the "Small Sports Car" category became a part of the company heritage still seen in model nomenclature today. It's been decades since I've done any driving deep in the Mexican interior, but I remember interesting roads shared with "interesting" traffic. The revival has been staged since 1988 and looks like quite an adventure.

Sportscar Digest has a terrific gallery up, from which this photo has been borrowed (the accompanying article appears to be Castillian run through GoogleTranslate without benefit of an edit): http://www.sportscardigest.com/la-ca...photo-gallery/

Been there done that in 91 and the "golden rule" applied then specifically to the factory Alfa team but their gold couldn't buy them a win in sport menor.

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.
But after that moment you are on your own and nobody owes you a damn thing.

The 3 Porsches in the photo belong to Azcarraga (silver 911 - Televisa $$$$) and friends, the fourth is a bodyguard's car. Azcarraga's 911 had an engine failure, he installed the whole drivetrain replacement he brought only to have the clutch malfunction, loosing first place in the standings on his category on day 3.
The current "owner" of the Panamericana is Eduardo Leon, he has been modifying the rules to admit more entries = more money. Winning cars are really modern competition machines inside "period" bodies

That was also the case in 1991. Not much 'stock' in our 356. It took 1'st in sport menor, 3rd overall.
