Best source to refinish a stock steering wheel

    Hi,

I have been searching and reading posts on steering wheel refinishing, double wraps, 380mm wheels etc. My stock 400mm (foam?) wheel is "broken" down at 12:00 (eg the material rotates on the underlying frame).

    My questions are:

    1. Who is the best steering wheel refinisher? I have seen many references to Tony @ Autobahn but wondered if there was anybody else I should consider

    2. How much should one expect to pay to repair and "double wrap" my orig wheel (I realize from many posts that correctly making the grip thicker involves adding padding under a single layer of leather)?

    3. Should I go the 380mm (914) wheel on an otherwise stock 911 (my dad purchased the car new in 12/72) ? I always thought the 400mm was awkward but some of that may have been due to the incredibly thin grip size of the stock wheel. At 6'1" w/ long legs the stock wheel sometimes even impacts my lower thighs unless I move the seat ALL the way back which creates other discomforts.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

    ...Roger

    Roger,
Don't know who does steering wheels, I'm looking also.
I have used a 380 on my cars since 74. Now I also use a thick hub for more leg clerance. It makes the car alot better to drive for people over 6'. I have both a 30 mm hub and a custom 45mm hub-just for fun. Everyone that has driven my car comments on how comfortable the wheel is. H

I've got a 380mm VDM wheel that was recovered by Tony @ Autobahn. Excellent workmanship, and the double wrap is nice, but not too thick. The 380 is a lot less like a bus wheel than the 400 but not out of place like my previous 350 Momo on my stock car.
I'm also 6'1" and could probably benefit from the 30mm hub extension as the wheel hits my thighs. Harvey, any idea of a source for the hub extension?

    Cheers

Thanks for the great comments guys. It does seem that the 380 is the way to go... where does one find the hub extensions?

http://zuffenhaus.us/ has the extensions on their website, but I haven't had any luck in contacting them.

guys I found a place just recently that markets very decent looking padded 914 380MM wheels on Ebay ,I contacted Don and was informed

they can easily restore my own 914 or 911 wheel for a slightly reduced rate and 4-5 day turnaround.

    Contact Don Le at dallascustomsteeringwheel.com

I've had several wheels recovered by Don (in his 'double wrap' style) - fast turn around & good value for money.

So how much does dallascustomsteeringwheel.com charge to double wrap a customer supplied wheel? And as the preferred alternative, who sells a double wrapped 380mm, besides, zuffenhaus? Apparently, Zuffenhaus is either out of wheels/hubs or at minimum non-responsive as there are multiple posts about their lack of communications.

I'll add my shop to the list of satisfied "Dallas Custom Wheel" customers. I won't publish what we've paid for jobs, as that is their business not mine, but I will say that for what they do they are fairly priced, they will give an estimate when they receive your wheel so you can back out if you don't like it, and it's finished in the given time frame. Good company, good service.
