Hi, the title of this post really says it all:
on the famous (and expen$$ive!) 7x15 R wheels, should the part # code be stamped or engraved?
Because, on most early Fuchs wheels I've seen, the part # is engraved in the metal.
Thanks,

Stamped. Search treads here and at the pelican forum, and you will find lot of pictures.

Hi,
In case a few more pics/info helps.
I have seen/had 7/15 R rims dated 67, 68, and 70. It seems that all these early 7s have become termed as 7R rims. I have seen them with numbers and details ground off and some with details (but with just the 06 of the part number) ground off.
Eg these are from a 7/68 and 10/68 early 7

Agree with Alan, I have also seen a pair of 7R's with ground off numbers, then stamped in a tread at Pelican. Mine are both stamped, and the dates are:
10/68 and 12/67

Thanks guys!
The reason I'm asking is this: when we send the wheels to refurbish (is this the correct English term?!), the first thing they do is dip them in acid, and there goes the stamped code...

I don't think there was a part number insert made for the 7R wheel. All the ones that I have seen were ground off and ink stamped.
We put the stamps back on when they are restored..

In case you haven't seen the even rarer 6R

Thanks Harvey!
I take it that "ground off" equals what I call, in my poor English, "engraving" – right?

Richard, I believe the early 6Rs were originally forged out of the 5.5 blanks before they went to the full blown deep six blank. Same face as the regular deep six with the different part number and were slightly lighter than the deep six. Like the 7R, often had the original 5.5 numbers ground off and then ink stamped.
As I'm sitting in Perth waiting to get home, I take this opportunity to chime in before the master does, heh heh.
