    Jim Goes For Glasurit Silver Metallic...Stunning!

    Here is a sample of a top-shelf two part base-coat clear coat system...Glasurit water 90-Line and Glasurit high solid clear. I must continue to give this product two thumbs up...way up! Silver metallic is by far the most difficult color to spray in my book due to the challenges in laying down the metallic’s without running them or, having the metallic’s lay down uneven. The 90-line product was a pleasure to spray. The top coat clear layed down like butter. Super high solids making an excellent resistance to weathering and yellowing. Great gloss and holdout.....okay enough, I sound like a Glasurit rep. If you are considering having your car painted, I recommend this system. High cost for this stuff but well worth the pennies.

    The project was a bare metal paint restoration. One challenge in the project was closing the gap on the 72 oil filler flap. Most of the these lids come with enormous gaps that do not match any of the other gaps. So, we close the gap to 3-4 mm to match that of the doors. Also, when stripping the paint down to metal, I found rust webs forming behind the primer. Basically, moisture finds it’s way right down to the metal. After scoring the metal with 80 grit, I applied a metal cleaner and conditioner and two coats of epoxy primer. The metal on Jim’s car will never see rust again. Jim, congratulations on doing your 72 911T right from metal right up to the clear coat. Enjoy!

    Thanks guys for the motivation. I must say, big difference in quality when you can start with a clean canvas..so to speak. Starting from metal on up allows me to properly layer the different coats of materials in a fashion that not only protects the body, but gives me a glamour finish that will last for many years. Hey, it's a great upgrade.

    Closing the gaps is a very laborious process. It takes a keen eye and excellent welding experience. Some like to use fillers to close gaps. Even though this method closes the gaps, however, eventually the fillers crack. I like to use metal to fill the gaps using a combination of metal welding rods and welding beads. To finish the top surfaces, I use a high grade filler and then finish flat. The process is time consuming since you must also finish the back side of panels so they look as good as the front side with a factory looking finish. Here a few shots...someday I will have to do a post on this process.

    Looking at these closures is almost as much pleasure as looking at the paint. I can only imagine all the work that goes into getting these kinds of results. Wonderful.

    Thanks Rick, it's gratifying work indeed. This car has 289.3 hours of good labor..most o f it in metal work and prep work. However, there is so much more I need to learn and perfect. My photo skills, on-the-other-hand, need much improvement ; ) Good thing for my Canon G11. In need of a Bob Tilton Photography 101 course..rapido.

    Freddie delivered the car today and I was blown away by the fit and finish. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have a few talented professionals work on my car, but Freddie’s work jumps to the top. Freddie preped my car to within an inch of its life - meticulously taking the entire car down to bare metal and back with quality Glasurit products. We had some concerns relative to spraying 90 line vs. 55 line, but Freddie achieved fabulous results with the water based formula. Freddie is da man!

    While my previous paint was in decent shape (a “5 footer”), there were some ominous signs that all wasn’t well. Previous bondo work was starting to lift on the driver’s door plus rear quarter panel and a clear bra over the front hood was rapidly aging and peeling. Finally, an illegitimate passenger side rear view mirror needed to go and prompted my call to Freddie. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves as they best highlight Freddie’s mad paintwork skills, but the discovery of rust forming underneath the primer early on in the project was very interesting and unexpected. You never know what is lurking behind your paint unless you have to look!

    Can you tell us which brand or metal conditioner and cleaner you use? After the 80 and the conditioner, do you go straight to the epoxy primer and build from there?
