Thread: Front mounted oil tank?

    Front mounted oil tank?

I seem to see very few modified Porsches with the oil tank mounted up front for better weight distribution. Why is that? Is it to do with the oil pump?

Racecars do it more often since it involves a lot of fabrication to make the aftermarket tanks fit up there, then plumb it, etc. It is not of enough benefit for a street car to go through the work.

    Thanks for the response Flieger.

I am surprised though that given the very complex/comprehensive build threads on this and the 'other' forum that we don't see more front mounted oil tanks. Ten liters of oil plus the tank ain't exactly light.

Plumbing ten liters of oil back and forth isn't exactly cheap.

And the fluid in those lines has mass, although if you already have a front oil cooler it might not be so much of an issue.

    That was my thought too.
What, if anything, has to be done to the oil pump?

We are in the midst of doing this for what will be primarily a track toy. Because we have a front oil cooler, it is a bit easier, but still a fair amount of work as pretty much everything requires custom fabrication and fitting.

Thanks, what oil pump will you be using?
