Thanks for all those links, Raj... that New York Times story rang a big bell. Sure, it would be nice if the car were real, but a safe bet it's not. All that glossy black underneath looks scary to me... but that's just the tip if the iceberg. A bunch of bidders are in for a horror story.

    Busted. Nice work Agent 4949.

These cowboys out there bidding on cars without doing their homework really messes up the market. Someone is going to be very upside down.

    Here's another clue to mis-info (lying) :

"It has always been a California car since new, and these original first issued blue license plates, can be, and should be preserved regardless of where it goes."

That plate is a 1981 & later issue Blue plate .

1970 (jan.1) - 1976 Blue plate have a narrower CALIFORNIA (look closely at the letter A if you cannot make out the CALIFORNIA spacing differance. Plus they were nowhere near sequence xxx Vxx in 1970) .

Check out this website with explanation and examples :

    www.15q.net/ca.html

"California 1969/70 passenger issue / This plate has the same narrower dies for the state name as the older 1963-era plates had."

"California 1977 passenger issue. / This plate features a wider die set for the state name and smaller sticker wells at the top corners. This series began in 1975 starting with plate number 501-LXU."

"California 1978 passenger issue. Another variant on the blue base, plates starting in 1977 in the late "S" series through approximately the "WKZ" series carried these fatter serial dies. This variation was fairly short-lived, only lasting a year or so before the next set of dies was rolled out (see next.)"

*BINGO* : "California 1981 passenger issue. Around 1979, at approximately the "WLA" series of plates, California switched to narrower dies for the serial numbers on these plates. This was done to prepare for the upcoming seven-digit variety of this plate numbering sequence. Similar dies are still in use today."

The 914-6 PU is very nicely done. The small part that I had a hand in was the wheels. They are NEW 8&9s with a special production finish. Note 9s usually don't fit GT fenders so well. These must have been massaged some...or are they Troutman/Barnes?
