This car is truly unique and one-of-a-kind. In 1973, there were only 136 Porsche 911 S cars built with Sportomatic gearboxes. How many were Targas? Who knows. Plus, this car came with a special color to match interior. This means, that you can really put whatever interior you want in the car. It is safe to say that there are probably no other early 911 like this.

The owner of this car is a very close friend and client of mine. I’ve sold many of his cars over the years and I must say that he does things right. He purchased this car a couple of years ago with the intent of restoring this car to a very cool sleeper. He spent an insane amount of money building an amazing 3.9L engine for the car with a custom 915 gearbox. He then proceeded to replace or restore everything mechanical on the car. The final stage in the process was to restore the cosmetics of the car and put a custom interior in the car. However, this goal was not completely realized. The owner sold the 3.9 motor and just finished having the numbers matching original “S” motor rebuilt and put back into the car.

When he purchased this car, it still had its original sportomatic gearbox installed and it worked great. Included with the car are all the original sportomatic parts in case anyone wants to reinstall it. The short time he drove it with the sportomatic, he raved about how nice it was to drive an early car without having to clutch…perfect for those long Monterey drives/early 911 rallies.

Here is a list of all the repairs that were recently made to this 911:
New 915 transmission with Quaife LSD
Custom restored 6x16 Fuchs by Harvey Weidman (including the spare)…these were carefully restored to look like 15” wheels with the flexibility of better tire offerings of 16” wheels!
Bridgestone RE-11 tires (205/55 on front and 225/50 on rear)
Corner balanced and aligned by Jay Lee
New clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and throw out bearing
Fresh top end engine rebuild (less than 500 miles)
    Chain tensioners
    SSI heat exchangers
Rebuilt S brakes (calipers, lines, new master cylinder)
    New Bilstein shocks
    Powder coated all suspension components
    Turbo Tie Rods
    Aluminum trailing arms
All bushings and bearings are new
Elephant racing fender oil cooler with fan and thermostat
Correct date stamped tool kit: very original and complete
380mm RS Steering wheel with extended hub by Dave Conklin and restored by Tony at Autobahn.

Basically, you are buying a car that is like new, mechanically speaking. The owner has over $70,000 into this car as it sits.

The exterior is in great shape. The paint appears to be an older paint job and is in decent condition. The color shade is correct, but it has a tad more metallic flake in the paint than it did when new. You don’t really notice it until you are in bright sunlight. There does not appear to be any rust on the car and no signs of accident damage as well. There are some rock chips and other signs of wear. The interior is in good condition. A new and correct dash was installed as well as original door pockets that are in great condition. The targa top is in decent condition with the normal signs of vinyl shrinking on top. The headliner is in great condition. It also appears that all the glass is original and in great condition too. Also, a new carpet kit was installed. The cream color accents are original to the car. Black leatherette flat seats were installed. There are no tears or much sign of wear on the seats, but the stuffing is a bit soft. The A/C under dash vents appear to be in good condition, but the rest of the A/C system was removed when the 3.9L motor was installed. Cosmetically, this is not a concours car but rather a nice and tidy driver.

Included with the sale of this car are the following items not installed:

All the original sportomatic components: special oil tank, shift solenoids, torque converter, pedal assembly, vacuum reservoir, special oil gauge, speedo gauge, floor pedal board, and original axels.
Passenger side battery box (removed to fit oil cooler with fan)
    Original A/C compressor and condenser
    Original date stamped steering wheel

This car comes complete with tool kit, jack, owner’s manuals, 2 keys, and many receipts dating back from new to the mid 90’s as well as all the recent mechanical work.

Thanks for the kudos. I think Sportos are going to gain in popularity. There are so few complete Sportos that the demand for parts will be high. People forget that 10 years ago, people didn't want a tangerine early 911 with factory a/c. I remember, we used to throw out the a/c systems. Now, they are one of the most desireable options. I think the early 911 enthusiast base is getting older and look for more varieties in their cars and not just hot rods.

I agree on reinstalling the sportomatic trans. A sporto car is a FUN car to drive, the S even moreseo.

Please see link attached. I owned a 73 911S Coupe, this was my car for a little over two years before I sold it to my friend Earl. It was the most interesting 911 I have ever owned, and its the only 911 I really regret selling. If you do a little research, you will find that the torque convertor on S sportos were set to lock up about 300 RPM higher, if I recall correctly. It was like driving a chainsaw! The engine would rev, and the convertor would catch up. It was a little like turbo lag, but much more fun. When I sold the car, everybody (most everybody) hated sportos and made fun of them. Its nice to see that they are getting some well deserved respect. http://www.sportomatic.com/sportowners/earl.htm
