Are OEM Bosch twin plug parts collectible

This is a topic I never dreamed of just a few years ago, but seeing this add on Ebay, asking 3k for a Bosch RSR distibutor cap caught my attention.

My 914-6 has a 3.2 SS with a distributor that uses a Bosch RSR cap and rotor. It is a vintage SC distibutor conversion, probably a Jerry Woods or Andial. The distributor parts only have a few hundred miles on them. My car and motor are not factory correct. There is no authenticy issue for me to deal with. Are guys with factory race cars actually concerned about the authenticy of these consumables? Should I be buying repro cap and rotor and putting the OEM on a shelf?

I tend to agree with you. The thought of consumable parts, subject to regular replacement, carrying such a premium does seem asinine. This is carrying the originality thing a little bit beyond reason in my personal opinion, but I would be far wealther if my sense of the market was always right.

I wasn't in the market for these parts, but was Ebay surfing when I stumbled on the listing for the cap for 3K. I almost fell of my chair. I since went on a search and found the price point for repro cap and rotor is a little less that $1000. The seller clearly thinks a substantial premium is warranted. I am just curious what everyone else thinks.

Lets see what it sells for first! Asking and getting may be miles apart.

You can still find new Bosch twin-plug distributor caps occasionally for ~ $1000 -...

Aaron Burnham currently has a complete twin-plug distributor (conversion) with NOS Bosch cap & rotor for $2200:
