Weber carbs, Italian made or ???

Many early 911s were equipped with Italian made Weber 40s.
There were also replacement Webers made somewhere else ( Spain ? ) I'm not referring to PMOs, Zeniths or Solexes.
Are there differences between the OE Italian jobs and the later replacement Weber units ? eg. interchangability, quality, specs, features ? Just asking.

These later Webers were made in the USA by Carter Carburettors & were of inconsistent quality which gave rise to multiple problems & this eventually led to Richard Parr producing his own uprated/improved evolution - the PMO.

Here's a quote from Matt Blast of Eurometrix:

"Richard actually offered his expertise in trying to help the Carter Corp. work out the bugs (and there are many) but his advice was ignored. The Italian Webers are a work of art really.....nicely done castings and precision machine work.

The Carter Webers are hit or miss. Some of them worked OK but some did not. If you ever take them apart make sure you carefully check for shim rings in the emulsion tube wells (under the emulsion tubes) because sometimes the wells were machined too deep and shims were used to raise the emulsion tubes to the proper level. Also the shims are of varying thickness because the wells are not all the same depth. If you lose the shims (a lot of them are lost by now) they don't work so well.

They also had shaft misallignment issues and other problems. "
