    1974 (75 ?) narrow body 3.0 Turbo

    I have a good amount of interest in 1974 -77 special 911 based models. Anyone know anything about this car on the cover of "Porsche Sport 1974/75" ?

    Was it a factory project ? I wonder because of the few people i've asked , no one knew anything about it. And I believe the 'Porsche Sport' series of publications was US based.

    That , and what looks to be Calif. plates on the car. Make me wonder if this was something other than a Factory project.

    I used to have this book, but I gave it to Ed Mayo a few years ago. If I recall correctly, it was a custom turbo installation done in California. Definitely not a factory project.

    It's technically not a narrow body car as it has 8" wheels and Carrera flares.

    As we all know, Porsche's foray into Turbocharging started with the racecars and trickled down over a number of years (917s, RSR 2.1L turbo, the 934, etc.). Factory Turbo street cars didn't hit the streets until 1975/6. The car in the picture is a '74; in 1974 Porsche had just built the RSR 2.1T and was still working on "trickling down" the technology.

    Porsche never built a non-turbo-flared street car. However, people have been stuffing non-intercoolef 76/7 3.0L and 3.3L engines in non-turbo cars since the moment they became available for consumption.

    My recommendation would be to check the book's copyright/publication date and you'll probably find it to be sometime in 76 or 77.

    But, to directly answer your question, the car pictured above was probably built by an independent or - and this is highly doubtful - Porsche's Special Wishes Department. The plate frame looks like it says "Andial" ... but I'm on a iPhone so all bets are off.

    There was somebody selling bolt on turbo kits in that time frame, I can't recall who. I'm sure someone here will remember.

    Slight expansion on your statement raj. I believe the only street 911 based Turbo cars that were produced during 1974 MY were prototypes. Interestingly. The first Factory show car. Had a mock-up wood motor for the (Paris Salon ?) show (and probably the other Salon/shows elsewhere). It had an (RS3.0 or RSR 3.0 , I'm not guite clear on which. And i'm not sure anyone is) installed by the factory for Alan Hamilton (and he bought the car) in 1975. The factory might have had other motors in it in between , but at the Paris (and Tokyo I believe) , shows it's reported to have had the wood mock-up.

    I believe it was built out of a 1973 911S car

    Factory prototype previously disscussed

    As described in magazines and books, this is the prototype 911 Turbo which appeared at a number of international auto shows. After completing the show circuit, it was converted to full race RSR specifications at the factory in period by request of Australian Porsche Importer Alan Hamilton. RHD.     (I had to stary another post to continue writing after a photo is attached. Maybe this can be changed ? On other forums it is possible to continue adding text ).


    Another reason that Showcar vin is most likely , actually 911 330 0157, is on the PP thread you linked. The other discovered 'Prototype' 911 Turbo street car was also built on a 911S car chassis (only a 1974 MY unit) . Very interesting is just as the owner of this example notes. The VIN sequence is PAST , were the recorded production figures released by the factory end :

    911 S Coupé / 911 430 0001 - 911 430 1359 (and note also. It seems to be on a US chassis. As ROW cars , I don't believe , have drivers window pillar VIN plates) :

    "What we found is: All factory turbo suspension mounts, Factory turbo rear flares, Factory rear wiper, intermittent wiper controls and headlight washers and out of a total production run of 1359 cars this one is 1365"
