Thread: Difference between brake calipers....

    Difference between brake calipers....

Can anybody help to understand and recognize the difference between the brake calipers for a SWB S versus the normal brake calipers for the 911 (front and Back). I see that in the parts book there is a seperate number for the S version and L version but how can I see by looking to my calipers if I have the right one?

As the parts numbers are not mentioned on the calipers can somebody help me to understand were to look for? I see codes on the calipers but I can not refer them to any specification.

I am owning a Porsche 911S from 1968 SWB. I do know how to recognize the S calipers for the LWB version.

Many thanks in advance for your support again!

    With regards,

S and L have vented rotors on all corners, therefore the iron calipers have spacers between the halves. The other models had solid rotors.

Do a search for neunelfer, he posted pictures in the past.

For 1967 & 1968 the 911S used vented rotors front and rear. The standard front calipers got 7mm spacers and longer bolts to hold the halves together. In the rear the S caliper also got spacers, but the piston size was increased from 35mm to 38mm diameter. The cross-over line and the bolts were longer as well.

As Mr. Pateman mentions, the real difference between the S those years and the regular 911's were the 7mm spacers up front and a slightly different caliper in the rear. The front calipers were in effect the first vented M-Caliper. There are some casting differences but they are slight and in overall appearance and function, they are identical. The rears were a slightly different animal. They did take the L-Caliper casting and bored it out to 38mm as Dave mentions. This makes for a very thin and fragile dust boot clip surround. They also used 7mm fasteners (vs. 6mm on the standard L) with the 10mm spacers. They also came with a pair of dog bone spacers to allow the caliper to line up over the new rear vented rotors. Castings all seem to be slightly different but, that almost goes car for car with those L-Calipers and Wide L-Calipers. Some early L-Calipers were actually mis-matched bastards with 356 caliper 1/2's mated to a later L-Style back 1/2. We found this on a couple of cars, one was a German MasterTech 66 car.

See the sharp angled gussets under the caliper wings on these? This is how you know you have the correct, very early 911S M-Caliper on your car. Many have been replaced over the years (dealerships etc):

Here's a better shot of the gussets from underneath. Later M-Caliper castings had this area smoothed out:

Here's one of the bastard L-Calipers with the 356 nose:

And... here's the Wide L-Caliper that should be on the ealry S Cars. Most basic L-Calipers look like this without the spacers:

    Max... checks in the mail!

Did you see the FREE annular rotors being offered? Possibly from an RS60.
Okay, they are worn & useless, but for a geek, well you might want a sample at least.
