all we ever needed to know about 911R wheels

    Guys

I am considering planning for a purchase of 911R wheels for my new to me narrow body 72 coupe. I have done some searches but I can't seem to find what I need: are there different 911R rear rims? Are all 4 the same? What is the best tire to run on them?

    Thanks,

    James

The 7x15 7R wheels are used on rear of SWB cars, so they can fit a 7 inch wheel without flaring the fenders, 6x15 in front. Your 72 has a rear fender flare, and a normal 7x15 fits without modification. Save your money

    Ditto.
As much as I like 7Rs they don't belong on a 72 IMHO.

    Guys,

Would a 1970-1973 car have the suitable front and rear fenders for a 911R inspired car?

If that were the case, then you could use 6" on the front and 7" on the rear.

    Cheers,

    Geoff.

The flares look a little different on the rear. The 911R was a SWB car, and you have a LWB car, so you could build a nice R inspired car but it will be pretty obvious that it's not a real R, so I wouldn't worry about the slight difference of the flare profile. As far as the wheels go, they will fit either way. There have been lots of nice LWB R tributes built, maybe someone will post some examples. I'm on the road with my iPad.

7R fitment vs 7x15 fitment fact

SWB cars that retain the stock early unflared quarters CAN wear 7x15s. My 66 R clone wears a nice pair. Therefore the 7x15s will also fit on the 69 and later "flared"...(but just slightly) cars.

With R wheels you need to worry about the back side of the wheel/tire hitting the oil lines that run along the body; with a standard 7X15 you need to worry about the tire rubbing the flare and burning the paint. Your car doesn't have this problem.

Since you have a 72 you're more likely to have problems with backside clearance than, say, everyone else with a tank in the standard location.

As the saying goes: if ain't broke don't fix it.
