1970 valve covers, painted or naked?

Taking apart a very original, long untouched, early 1970 E engine. (Cork gaskets on the intake valve covers.) Valve covers are not painted, inside or out. I thought that all of the magnesium valve covers were painted. Anyone know?

The original valve covers on my 1970 2.2 T engine are NOT painted. The original valve covers on my 1972 2.4 T were painted black.
