    VIN plate

307523 shouldn't be an S serial number so why does it say "911S"?

Why should it not be an S ?
Please post a photo of the VIN stamped into the body just below the gas heater compartment lid.
Please post a photo of the paint code tag from the left door hinge post.
You can also confirm by removing the knee pad and getting a photo of the number stamped below the radio opening.

More to the point, what is the VIN tag doing way up by the gas heater compartment lid? It should be down on the lid closure panel.

    Thanks Dave.
I was hoping you'd have the time to pitch in.
I can't see the S after the last VIN digit, hence my doubt. But I agree the 911S impression above could be genuine (I understand often the "S" was added after the three "911" digits had been impressed on the tag, so it can look mismatched and bigger, as it does here). I have been trying to get pics of the VIN code and paint code stamps but the seller is a bit disfunctional and hasn't been able so far. Trying to estabilish my odds before I embark on a 1000 mile trip to go take a look in person.

If the engine serial number begins 961 there's a good chance you're looking
at a matching numbers 67S. Dave can probably place it to within 100 serial
numbers with his database, or better.

I wouldn't read too much into the VIN plate, it looks pretty good to me, get
the trunk stamping like Dave said to be sure.

From the picture it looks like the VIN plate is near the smugglers box
which is not where it should be except on very early cars I believe.
Obviously a respray as that are should be black on a 67, they've
moved the VIN tag in the process.

So an S doesnt necessarely need to have an S at the end of the VIN I gather. I'll try to get the rest of the info from the owner then....

The S is always stamped in the chassis by the smugglers box 307523S (S at the end)
and also the driver side door tag should have a 307523S stamped into it also
the metal plate tag does say 911S on top with just the vin 307523 which is correct
it just seems to be in the wrong place on the chassis
