Thread: serial number locations.

    serial number locations.

Where are all of the serial numbers located on a '73 911? The aluminum plate at the front of the car, by the smugglers box, on the post drivers side? Are those all of the locations?

I've seen other posts from members that there are numbers under the dash pad and the knee pad. Was that an earlier LWB? I've also seen 911's without the post serial number.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Pix appreciated.

After 69 any 911 without the A post number is probably a Euro market car, since that number location wasn't required in Europe at that time. There should be the stamped number behind the knee guard and a number written in crayon on top of the instrument area of the dash on the 73.

Please note that the number stamped behind the knee guard is not the serial # but a production # that will be different.......just trying to spare you from that awful feeling that your car has been "clipped" or has "stolen car ring" in it's ownership history!

I would love to have more light shed on this...

If I understand correctly, a 1969 car built for export to the USA should have matching chassis number stamps next to the smuggler's box and on the A pillar. That same number will also be on the silver plate next to the front hood latch. -Those three numbers must match, correct?

There are also stamps on the dash above the radio and (sometimes) on the lip of the inspection port on the tunnel. But those numbers are just production numbers and don't have to match the 3 actual chassis (VIN) number locations (A pillar, smug.box and silver plate). Is that what you're saying?

The number below the radio openning, and in grease pencil on the top of the dash will be the VIN up to & including 1968. From 1969 on it will be the production number. If you have a Karmann bodied car, then there should also be a Karmann number stamped into the body; different locations depending upon the year.
