Just bought '65 911 VIN 300278, bali blue with pepita seats, need restoration help

I bought it from someone I knew from the San Diego PCA, and he has owned it since 1971. He has all the registration receipts back to then, but no other records other than a mileage log with maintenance and repairs performed. He owned a general auto repair shop (non-Porsche) and did all maintenance and repairs (including a rebuild) himself. Really a neat car guy.

The car has sat for at least 10 years (the last sticker on the plate is 1986), and needs the usual front pan rust repair, but the rest of the car is solid, having been in SoCal since 1971. The original pepita (houndstooth?) seats are in amazing shape for their age, and it has a wood rimmed steering wheel.

This is VIN 300278...according to the Red Book I think this makes it the 278th 911 produced!?!?
He still has the four screw horn grilles for it, nice 4.5" chrome wheels (he put 5.5" steelies on it for better handling), and a bunch of other cool parts.

He repainted it in the 80s with a metallic blue similar to Bali, but that paint is tired. It will need a complete stripdown and repaint. It has 71,000 miles...the engine ran fine when parked he says...we shall see!

Here are a couple of bad iPhone photos of my midnight blue '95 993 and the '65. I just *love* blue 911s, and I am stoked that this one is originally Bali blue. I'm feeling overwhelmed with the scope of this project, but excited too!

When I first heard about the car and its color and interior combo, I remembered Alois Ruf's 901 in this same scheme that I lusted after. This is my goal.

Congrats!! Nice looking car and original (except the fenders). Black plates will look great but thats just my preference.
I love the angle numbers on the tail and it's really nice to see dent free front and rear bumperettes.

congratulations! nice to have 993 and SWB, and drive them both to feel their connectedness. Bali blue is a rare and beautiful color. it's like a blue heading to purple without actually going there.

Nice purchase, good luck with your restoration. I am always curious though when someone buys a car that's been dormant for years and the seller says "ran fine when I parked it" Well then, WHY did you park it??? One of life's little mysteries!

Yes, it is the 278th VIN, and would likely be mid to late January production. Does it still have the original engine and transmission? A great find. Is the engine lid closure panel flat or does it have depressions where they put the decals later on?
