Yep, we are on tsunami warning here. It is supposed to be a 4 foot sea level rise for 10-15 minute periods here in Morro Bay.

8.9 is a real big 'un, and only days after their mid 7 quake in Japan. Here is some video of the tsunami rampaging through the countryside and across an airport: http://news.discovery.com/earth/japa...eo-110311.html

No kidding. The Northridge quake in '94 was only a 6.7! Since the Richter scale is logarithmic, that means this one was over 100 times as powerful. The tsunami scenes on the news are staggering. My heart goes out to those who have been effected by this disaster.

Well, Japan has a triple-subduction zone. Alaska-Washington have a normal subduction zone, and they are past due for the big, 300 year earthquake. California has a more docile strike-slip fault. The San Andreas is generally a smooth motion, because of the soft rock. It does occasionally get a bigger one like Northridge but nothing like the 8-9+ magnitudes.

What was the NZ quake? 7.9 or something? That is a strike-slip fault, too. The tragedy was how close (as the crow flies and it was shallow) to Christchurch it hit, to casue such devastation.
