    R Gruppe/Hot Rod project

Having done the concours thing and some other restorations and having owned a couple of RS cars I have decided as alast hurrah to build an R Gruppe car

Since riding in Jeff Smiths red rocket at Sonoma 5 years ago I had the desire to do something along those lines and gees it would be awesome if it turned out even close to that....which i doubt it will.

The base car is a very good and quite original ex USA Silver 72T/E briefly owned by Don Murray and sold to my friend Phil Lack who shipped it back to Australia. Some of you may remember us driving it at Sonoma that year. It was delivered with all S trim including sway bars but without front alloy brakes calipers.

Phil bought it back to Australia and on sold it in the next 12 months

That owner then commissioned an expensive factory style RHD conversion where the whole front of an ex RHD UK 72S was cut out and transplanted into the T so that unless you really know the cars its impossible to tell it was ever LHD...the tell tale welding at the edges of the dash and the pedal box are the 2 areas its easy to spot but it has RHD smugglers box, actual RHD dash where heater controls sit a little higher than in all USA cars. Lots of new bits were also added to make it a pretty decent car all round. Paint work is fair, front pan was replaced stateside in 2006 before Phil collected the car.

The funny part is that I sold the panel shop who did the conversion an old RHD dash I had which they recovered for this car in exchange for getting the LHD dash out of this car that I wanted for my LHD ex USA 69S. Dashes has gone full circle

    So here is my plan...............

    RS rear flares
    RS style rear fibreglass bumper
    Alloy deck lid
    All side chrome trim removed
    S front bar...existing
Centre fill (Marek unit) with plastic RSR reproduction or 67' 100 litre steel tank
7R rears deep 6 fronts Harvey Weidman RSR finish
PMB Brembo alloy calipers all round
    RSR style door trims
S style carpets and ST style BF torino seats with Eric Linden houndstooth in Black and White
    Full repaint top and bottom.

oh and the minor issue of the powerplant.........I bought Randy Webbs 2.7 motor with motec, 993 varioram and all the titanium bits from pauter so hopefully it will give me a decent shove in the back when I push the go pedal. Apparently it gets up a head of steam pretty quickly!!

Have to do some work to the 915 to make sure its can cope, billet side plate, wevo shifter etc etc.

Here is the base before I get started.

    Thumbs up

Sounds like an outstanding project Clyde......

    One thing,
If your going with RS flares I'd go with 7's and 8's. It's more cost effective, and I'd want as much 15" tire on the ground as you can with that engine.........

In fact later 7x16 and 9x16 will get you a 225/50 x 224/45 f/r combo that's hard to beat for 'foot print' on a flared Early car.

When I drove Randy's car with that engine in Cambria I was very grateful to have all the tire it had......
I think that was 8's and 9's w/ST flares on Hoosiers......

    ......... just'a thought

    Cheers

Clyde sounds very cool. I am on the same page as Chuck; if you are going to flare I would stick the widest 15s you can find. Please post as you go these projects are fun to watch!
How much power will you get from the 2.7?

Sounds like it will be awesome. The only thing I'd do different is use the RS metal rear bumpers to meet the flares. I love that factory look.

Interesting thoughts sadly I allready own the wheels.

I hear you guys on the bigger wheels and the rear fibreglass bumper is to save some weight but I like std RS look also.

    Engine left USA today
