Wood dash fix in my 1966 911

    Hey All,

Just an update on my quest to spruce up the 1966 interior. When I got the car the wood had been covered in some finish that made it look like a big strip of nasty plastic-wood, not the beautiful natural woodgrain. Also, the radio space had been cut out to allow a "modern radio" with a larger form factor to fit in the space. I had the original blaupunkt, so all I needed was some good wood. With the help of my crafty uncle, I was able to refit some african mahogany back into the aluminum and refit the new wood pieces into the dash. I am really happy with the result.

The pictures don't really do it much justice. My point and shoot is not really up to the challenge. Here are the picts:

Looks great. I hope to do the same on my own 66 in the near future.

    The wood is fantastic!

Did you do the dash top too? If so, do you have any tips?

    Dash veneer finish

Oscillon, hats off to your good work.

For the guys who haven't seen the original color and finish here is a close look behind the ash tray handle on a period sample:

It had been a semi gloss finish. And the color is more toward the cherry than we remember.

On the exposed part, showing 47 years of good service the finish has aged, getting lighter and more yellow. (And how we tend to think of it always being).
