    Repair of Red Banjo Horn??

Can you do it? My hi tone recently failed and I would like to keep the original red horns. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, there is voltage to the hi tone and the relay was also replaced.

    yes you can!

    hey scott, its doable.
remove the perimeter screws and pop it open.
check continuity across the coil, if good its fixable.
clean out the rust and carefully sand the contacts on the "oscillator"
(you'll know what it is when you see it, like a set of distributor points)
reassemble with new gasket material (cut your own)
    test.
you can adjust the tone with a set screw next to the spade contacts.
its usually covered with a gob of black silicone.
i've been meaning to write this up, i've got pictures.

Bob, I finally got the horn off the car and disassembled yesterday. It looks like it is dead in the water. Having an electrical industry background, I used to see returned motor starters and contactors with coils like this. Toast I am afraid. There should be a second wire coming off the coil, but I cannot find where that is or should be. Any help? Also dumb question, has anyone replaced the coil? Sure would like to fix this as it is original to the car and was working last year. Unfortunately, I think I may be SOL.

edit: forgot pics - see next post

Sorry for the focus issue. I had the camera on auto focus and with a macro lens, it makes that difficult to do.

I am by no means an electrical expert, but could you take the guts out of a latter horn and install or retrofit them to your horn? I am missing one of my horns and have been looking for a replacement.

there is no second wire, it is grounded to case.
you can see where the wire shorted out to the case.
replace that wire and check continuity. it might be good.
probably more work than its worth but the coil could be rewound.
i don't think the guts from a later horn would fit.

Bob, thank you for the reply. Yeah I was looking at this yesterday and determined that the wire shorted to the case and that caused the failure. I do know a company that manufactures coils, but I doubt they would mess with having one lonely coil rewound. Or maybe Radio Shack has something that would work. Sure would like to know the specs of that coil (wire ga, # winds, ect).
