Looking for Dad's 911 (cool picture too)

Ok, I bring this up every once and a while.

Back in 1968, my dad bought a 1967 911S (though there is a chance it was a '66 that had S badges and engine installed). It was Irish Green with cork and houndstooth interior, with headrests. It had a wood dash insert (presumably a custom order), green gauges, factory air, and a wood steering wheel. He bought it from a German woman who brought it new from Germany.

He sold it in 1975 in Chicago, IL, to a couple who came in a red 356.

The Illinois license plate was SL 910.

And here is a picture from 1975 or so - yes, of yours truly. Dig the pants!

FYI, I just did a search on the IL DMV web site to try to get "SL 910" and it said it is unavailable - presumably because it is still outstanding.

I found some web sites that claim if you put in an IL license plate, they will give you the name of the current owner. I believe some states do allow this, and CA does not. But, it's a $30 charge to be a "member". And, I'm not sure I can even trust the sites. Anyone a member of any of these sites who can do a search?

Unavailable could mean that it is an unused sequence in modern times. I would check on that first before plunking down the $30. Is IL like CA in that plate numbers stay with the car so that the number could acutally still be in use?

Thanks for the thoughts. I did some more searching and it appears there is now a national law that might prohibit getting information based on license plate numbers (unless there is a claim). If that is true, I don't know what these sites are offering. Either way, I'm not inclined to send $30 through the ether to find out.

I tried to get on the Chicago PCA web site to see if I could post a query there. The site seems to be down right now. I'll try again.

I guess it sounds obvious, but you have no insurance paperwork, bill of sale, old registrations?

Well, believe it or not, I found the guy who bought the car from my dad! He only owned it for a year and doesn't know who he sold it to. He did however have the VIN. The car is not in this database. Does anyone know of any other Porsche enthusiast sites that might list cars with VINs? Is there a contact at PCA that might have that information?

He said that he and his wife have owned a number of Porsches over all those years. But, this is the one that they always compare their latest Porsche to.

Actually, I'm not so sure I want to find it anymore. It was neat to find the guy and learn how much he loved the car too. But, the pictures showed it a little bit worn since my dad had it. I think I'd be very bummed to see it in bad condition!

    Thanks,
    Jay
