    Oil pressure sender - dead?

Getting my 1969 911E motor with Webers sorted out here. When I turn on the ignition key, the oil pressure gauge pegs to the top. I check the grounds on it and all seems to be well. If I take the lead off the sender in the engine compartment and ground it, it goes back to the bottom.

Is this a sign the sender is dead? Is there any way to "revive" a sender?

    Thanks,
    Keith

What happens if you ground the wire to the sender body? That will tell you if the sender is grounded to the case.

Internal sender failure- fortunately for you the -69 sender is cheaper than the SWB version.

I took the sender out and played with a bit with no resolution.

Ed - continuity between sender body and ground, no continuity between contact and body, so it appears to have failed "open". In a way that's reassuring though, as adding all this to a 912 that never had it, I was worried the wiring was at fault.

John - I did initally balk at the $150 for the replacement for an OE Porsche from Pelican, but based on a post over there, I see the generic VDO part is more commonly available for $30. My local VW shop will have one.

    Thanks guys!

Replaced the sender with the VDO two terminal generic replacement from the local VW shop. Seemingly, the terminals aren't differentiated between warning light and gauge, so I had a 50% chance of getting it right on the first try (I didn't) but we are back to a functioning gague again. The gauge they had on hand seems to have the tapered threads instead of the M10 straight threads (even though it is listed as the VDO 360-023 model). Or maybe just a tighter fit? At any rate, holds oil!

The terminals should have been marked WK and G if memory serves me. WK being warning light and G being gauge. But as you say you're bound to get it right!!
