    POLL/CENSUS: Numbers Matching?

    OK, you Guys . . . .

This is it . . . the Money question.

We all talk/write/rant/obsess about numbers matching, but really . . . . we're only talking about one number here. And that's The Engine Number.

Regardless of the model, it's condition, originality, quality of paint/bodywork/mechanicals/whatever --- and regardless of how we may feel --- one way or the other (or both!) . . . we've all seen what the Marketplace makes of those 7 little itsy-bitsy numbers stamped on the side of the case.

    So? . . . . Showtime!

    Just one simple question.

Does the engine number in your car match the one Porsche says it first came with?

    Yes . . .

    . . . or No.

    Or?

It does NOW. Been 're-stamped' to match the records, as I know them.

    Or?

None. Blank. Replacement case, un-stamped. No numbers, at all. Gone Comando.

I can just smell the brimstone.

For me - "Yes", but I think you should add a category:

"Yes, but doesn't really matter. Originality is nice, but I'd love and appreciate the car just as much if it didn't."

In my instance (I almost said "case"), Yes, but the case is on a shelf, the car currently sporting a later case. Also, we're talking about two numbers, right? The kardex should list the gearbox number, which matches on my car still.

Yes, the numbers match. It is only the single most important question affecting the value of the car (if you ever sell it). Of course, like most on this forum, it will have to be pried from my cold dead hands when the reaper comes.....or actually from my son's hands after he takes it over when the reaper comes.

Well, these figures are the most interesting. Kinda surprising, in a way. But also? . . . NOT.

Regardless of what opinions any of us may have on the subject, the cars we keep are clearly of one type among those responding.

    37-to-1 isn't a margin --- that's a statement.

Wouldn't sink the $ required for a nice early Porsche without the matching numbers. It's obviously proven most of the cognoscenti won't even bother for a minute with a car that isn't matching.

That said, I couldn't care less for actually "using" the original engine case over another one.

To answer your question, the car is "matching" but the engine and transmission are pickled in storage. . .

    I think you need a 'kinda' option . . .

69E - Yes, original motor been pickled
73T - Kinda, original motor lost (car was a true barn find). . . but replaced with a 'numbers even closer' one
    78Turbo - Yes, I know this doesn't count
