From my 73S - originally a sporto. These do not look like they were ever black, the grille perhaps.

The 911S script along with the letters are anodized black (grayish) the 2.4 is chrome with black paint around the edge.

Agree with Ed, Harvey and David. '72-73 script and grille were originally black anodized. Most unrestored originals have faded to a purplish gray, or have been sun bleached to the satin silver look seen in the photo above.

Eastwood use to sell a paint that replicated black anodizing. It looked great, really brought back the letters. It did not even look like paint and even had the very slight red/purple hue. This was a while ago.
Here's some pictures i took today of my painted script where I was attempting to replicate a slightly faded black anodized set. Shot in natural light, but I'm not the photographer Randy is!!!

Have you considered powder coating?
Well no, not really, just not sure how that would work or if the look would be worth it.

I was just thinking about this very topic.
See the script for my 72S in the attached photo. I can't vouch for the originality of "Porsche" or "911S" script (or 2.4 for that matter) - clearly something looks incorrect, but I wasn't sure which. Also, if it matters, this was a euro-delivery originaly.
So it looks like the "911S" is at least the correct color, if not original, but the "Porsche" is not, and should be the same color as the "911S" - faded black anodyzed.
Am I intepreting the above thread correctly?
Ted
Yes Ted, the PORSCHE letters should be the same color as your 911S, and yes, Euro cars were the same. My yellow car pictured above is also a Euro. I see yours also has the rear fog light, so does mine, they were very common in Europe.
