Matching oil temperature sender to gauge

I recall reading that the oil temp sender must be matched to the gauge. Since my car is a mix of cars (although I seem to have stayed all 1969), how can I confirm which sender I need for the oil temp gauge I have installed?

    Thanks!

Okay Keith, I'll bite, which oil temp gauge did you install? I think the standard 911 gauge reads to 300 F.The oil temp sender should have its voltage and temp range etched on the side of the hex.

My oil temp gauge is from a 69 (I think E) but doesn't have a numeric range on it, just the gradient scale. Not certain what that really indicates!

That must be from the standard gauge package, don't see many of those. My best guess is that it actually has the same range as the numerical but without the numbers. I'd do a bench test with a battery, hot plate, thermometer, and desired sender. Heat it up and monitor the temperature along the way, I'll bet 212 will be about halfway through the needle movement and the red band will be in the 240 range.
