I am curious as to which years are the most valuable and desirable.

In My hunting i notice
72-73S are the top and sell pretty fast
then SWB 67-68 ones seem second,
69-70-71 last place
but all are very Kool and most wanted dead or alive,
Anything 1973 and earlier.

This may help you understand the differences between the years...

Desirability is quite subjective. Do you like:
- SWB or LWB?
- High compression or low compression?
- Targa or Coupe?
- Original or Hot Rod?
- Any particular color that is year-specific?
- Oil door internal or external?
- Hard window vs. Soft Window Targa?
- etc.
Value is time and option dependent...some history...

67/68/69 S Softies have sold for the highest values known to me with multiple cars trading at greater than $125,000.
I would have to say that cars have sold for high to low values in every category (coupe / targa) and year. Meaning a #1 S will sell for $100,000+/- : 67/68/69 2.0L, 70/71 2.2 or 72/73 2.4L.
It is when you move away from the top cars that it is a bit more challenging to answer your question as then it comes to driving preference.

This is a tough one. Some say the 73 as it's the last of the line. Some say 70-71 as they still have the higher compression ratio (72-73 does not) and it sounds better. Some say 69. I think it is somewhat about the car, it's history and condition. I have a 70S and love the car and how it sounds. Buy the best of any model you can find and have fun with it as much as you can.

How would you describe the difference in the sound of
a higher compression engine versus lower compression?
A more raspy, "tight" note?
I've heard this stated many times but never asked.

I had two 69's a 71 a 72 and a 73. I used to think the preference for the 70-71 was BS but now that I have owned all the LWB S's I would have to agree. They are all great cars and the differences are subtle. I like the H/C 2.2 the and the interior of the 70-71 the best.

Tough choice. For me, the most desirable S is the one I don't have
I love my '73 and plan on keeping until they pry the keys from my cold fingers, but if I could have another....
I'd probably go for a 2.2 for the compression ratio, sound and 901 (it's just one step closer to a race car IMO)
THEN... if I could have a 3rd, it'd be a '67. Nothing to do with performance, just the purity and simplicity of design.
