    Shift Coupler Tunnel Cover Material???

Just got my open-slotted shift tunnel cover back from the powder coater. Currently have the closed or non-slottled style in the car. Not sure of the material used in between or attached to the underside of the cover. Is it horse hair or filter typer material? Is it a solid rubber or other type part? Or was there nothing in between? Thanks for your help in advance.

Not sure about SWB. But LWB used a black piece if heavy cardboard. Similar to door backing.

This is the original backing piece and cover from the "Out of Africa" '68 swb TR, as Harvey said it is a type of thick card. Mine seems to have a coating on it that is more than just black paint but it could just be 43 years worth of dirt!

My 69 also had a thick piece of cardboard with a coating of tar over it, heavier around the edge. Looked original.

That is just like my 70. It is probably more like the sound proofing than the door paneling. I just coludn't bring myself to put that yucky stuff back in. The clean black paneling looks way better. BTW my grille was wrinkle finish and that was the harder part to match.

Hmm, I think my 70 has a felt material that acted somewhat like a filter and also has a metal mesh under the slotted cover. So, mine is a three pice deal....slotted top, mesh grill under that and the felt under that. I'm pretty positive mine didn't have the hard card.

I powder coated mine and put the carpet piece behind it then bolted my fire extinguisher to it.
