John:
That is a neat car as it sits. I would consider leaving it alone as these cars are classics now too. There are plenty of long hoods around to do the R Gruppe thing...my advice would be leave this one alone.

I wouldn't backdate that car ... I'd make it into a square-bumper hotrod.
Fiberglass bumpers, perhaps. Maybe a truckload of lights in a pod on the hood. Teatray or early Carrera tail. 15" wheels. BIG brakes. Fixed-back seats or **gasp** later Carrera seats.
I'm in the same boat as you as I just picked up a '74. Although I'm not really sure what to do with it yet. I'm not going to backdate it, but I need to start staring at photos again to see what I'm going to do with the look of the car. I know for a fact that it's going to get softer suspension ... it's like driving a darn buckboard.

yea, i'll live with it for while as is , but i just have this thing about impact bumper cars .... any way terrible weather weekend over here so once it clears i'll put up a few more photos. The car was fitted out for the narva tour over here ( baby targa ) so half cage , race seats etc... the seats are out and the recaro's are in for now . remove the center consul , clock , radio and add some more minimalist/r-gruppe look for a starter. The engine needs the cis removed and some better cam's / 44ida's added. but we'll do that later.

I like my IROC fiberglass with RS flares. I would not have updated my car but since it came that way I have grown to like it as much as the longhoods.

I think you'd be mad to mess with that too much, it looks a peach to me. Maybe put it on 15s and enjoy it. Get a cheap SC if you want to back date something. But IMHO back dating is a nonsense.
Nonsense your butt Northy. It's John's car and he can do what he damn well pleases. IMHO backdating is a GREAT way to have the best of both worlds. Damn the torpedoes...
