Thread: 67 interior trunk lid texture

    67 interior trunk lid texture

My understanding is that the texture of the inside of the trunk lid on a 67 should be a sand like texture not the Wurth bumpy undercoating as on later models. Is this correct and if so any ideas on how to achieve the proper results? Any input would be appreciated, pictures of unrestored trunk lids would be great.
    Thanks

Yes, you are correct, in fact all the undercoating on the early 911's was the same as used on the 356's with that grainy texture. I have not had any luck trying to really accurately duplicate that texture with the current Wurth products, no matter what spray settings I've tried. I don't think you can replicate that grainy finish without using that asphaltic based undercoating used at that time. That early undercoating became hard and brittle when dried. You might try some different brands, such as 3M and see what texture you get.

When I did my garage floor, they supplied some fine sand to mix with the paint to make it a non - skid surface...Cliff

Sure Skip, just hold the Schutz gun (the expensive adustable one) back about two feet when you shoot.

The schutz particles will air-dry on their way to the surface and when they stick you get a sandpaper like texture that approximates the factory finish.

Want LWB "waves"- opposite process- hold the gun 6" from the surface so the material really builds up and move it slowly.

With practice you will be able to replicate the early texture. A lot of practice. . . at $22 per bottle of schutz. . . good luck!

I tried that John, but it's damn hard to do up in the fenderwells and under the car when it's not on a rotisserie!!! I confess, I should have been able to do it better in the trunk, interior and engine bay. Looking forward to seeing yours at Parade,,,,coming up soon, how are you doing??

Interesting Richard, I would call that the smooth "mellow" texture like the later cars. What is the rest of the undercoating like in the other areas? The grainy texture mentioned?, because that describes what I've seen on the chassis of the older cars.

Ed I will take some pictures at my earliest convenience. Also from my unrestored but to be restored June 66 911 which (I believe) has similar structure.

BTW the 912 has a 45X XXX number which I believe is Karmann production?

Be careful. . . Karmann- built 912s (I own one) have wavy texture.
