    Yellow Engine Shroud?

I searched but didn't find an explanation for this.

My project 2.4 engine is out of the car and getting ramped up for disassembly. The engine shroud is black but I noticed that on one of the edges, it appears to be signal yellow underneath. I'm not aware of a yellow engine shroud and was hoping someone could tell me what this is and why it's yellow.

    Thanks

Okay I revised my spelling and searched again and found the answer that either yellow or black could've come on this car. Now my question is, was yellow a base coat for the black shroud? I'm wondering if mine was painted black and whether I should return it to yellow after the rebuild.

    Hello,
'72 T's (2.4L, MFI) had yellow shrouds as did the '73 2.4L T's with MFI. The '73 2.4L T's with CSI came out later that year and had the black shrouds. As far as my memory serves anyway... Hope this helps you.

So it sounds like mine may have been painted black at some point? I have a 73.5 with MFI and from what I'm reading it should have a black shroud.

Anyone have any photos of a 73.5 with a yellow shroud?

The 2.4T with MFI (1972-1973.5) used the yellow shroud.

I've got a few nice ones should anyone need one.

Thanks for the help everyone. I looked at the shroud again and it has definitely been painted. I can see scratches elsewhere on it that show its true color underneath and I recall now that the engine was rebuilt at one point in its lifetime. So now I have a different question. What can I use to remove the black paint to reveal the yellow underneath without damaging the yellow factory paint?

The yellow is impregnated into the fiberglass, so you won't be damaging the yellow factory paint.
I'd start with the least agressive paint remover you can find and go from there.
Once down to the yellow fiberglass shroud, I believe you can wetsand, use polishing compound, etc to bring some of these shrouds back to life.
If nothing else, there are many of these still around secondhand.

I soda blast them at low pressure to clean them before polishing. The soda will remove most of the black paint.
