I'm considering putting a period correct Halda Speedpilot on a Rally prepped 1966 Porsche 911. Can anyone comment on whether a Halda Speedpilot V Sports Special is correct for 1966? My research indicates that these were used widely in the mid 60s. Photo attached. Thanks.

    Hi

I think that the MkV is later than 1966. Of course this doesn't mean it couldn't have been fitted at a later time, but if you are looking for as new period correct then I believe you need the MkIV model with 3 knobs. I am no expert but I am a big fan of the Halda rally tools.

If you are planning to rally with this you will not have much luck if they are measuring distances smaller than 1/10 mile. The Speedpilot cannot measure distances smaller than 1/10 mile. A much more accurate setup would be a chronograph such as a Heuer with a Trip or Twinmaster which can measure to 1/100 mile.

Either setup will look awesome in your car. My opinion is to hell with originality and mount it even if it's not period correct. The Speedpilots were available in 66 and when they are set up they are a lot of fun.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for your very insightful post. I found an advertisement in Der White's literature site showing a Vilem B. Haan, Inc. (a motorsports accessory retailer in Beverly Hills, CA) ad in Car and Driver magazine dated January 1967. In the ad they show what appears to be a Mark V Speedpilot. That satisfies me that at least they were being used in 1967. I ordered a copy of the magazine so I can have an original of the ad. Will post it when I get my hands on it.
