I heard or read somewhere ovr the weekend that in addition to Gurney's new car that an electric car will be on the grid for next years race...As much as I love the sound and the fury of racing petrol powered cars, I am also glad to see racing start to grab the headlines again with technology. Apparantly there was some concern at the governing body over AUDI's race theme this year regarding light technology and it's ability to hold up in accidents...guess that worry was put to bed over the weekend, shame about the cars, but thank goodness for the drivers the technology worked.

The diesels sound like sewing machines when they go flying past you, but it's kinda cool to actually hear the tires hooking up and to hear the sound of the wind as makes its way under/over the car...I really noticed the sound of the wind last year at Montreal stanidng right beside the fence when they went by at 180 mph...yes the sound of the engine is searing, but the sound of the air/wind was almost as loud

Dave, I agree that if these alternate avenues aren't pursued, racing as we have known it will become a subject read about in books. I think that this new car is in response to the proposed Le Mans class that has a minimum weight of 1000 lbs, with an engine restricted to 300 hp. I say go for it, and see what innovations the engineers can come up with.

As for the F1 cars that Karim has posted, they include some of my favorites for thinking outside the box. Especially Piquet's Brabham, that ran most of the races with no front wing. As I recall, the last F1 car to do so.
