    Engine compartment sound pad

I've already consulted an expert on this but thought I'd seek the advice of the group at large. My factory sound pad is deteriorating and needs replacement. I know AppBiz and the factory have replacements. Recommendations as to the best product for the application would be appreciated.
As an aside my car is a 73 with MFI and I "do not" find the mechanical symphony emanating from the engine compartment offensive
    All advice appreciated.....

For what it's worth we never use the factory sound pad, it's not a question of 'if' it will come down, but rather when! I use the precut Appbiz pads, clean off all the bits of old pad, but don't go crazy, like Randy said, fit the new pad dry (put protective caps over the shock studs) make sure it comes out to the bent tabs at the back, then let it droop, spray some adhesive part way up stick about 6" at a time and work your way to the rear. You should come out right at the retaining clips. You may not mind the noise on a 15 minute trip, but a thousand mile drive is a different animal. By the way, I have never been gigged on the Appbiz pad at a concour, (probably will now though!!)

    Ed,
Thanks for the input. Do you use the standard AppBiz mat or the ultimate version they produce?

After removing what was left of my original sound pad and the old adhesive I opted for the AppBiz sound pad as well. It fit fairly snug with just the retaining clips so I used some wide Velcro strips of varied lengths just to be sure. Worked well and still in place with no drooping a year or so later.

It's a black, close density foam, don't remember the trade name, it's NOT the silver foil backed stuff.

Ok, this seems a timely thread, hope I am not highjacking as they say.

I have an "ultimate" pad from the Pelican, that seems to be from Apbiz, that I have not installed yet. This is the one with the shiny foil on one side. I somehow don't like the foil look, but went for the ultimate. I am such a sucker, it should be the best right?

In reading the threads regarding this stuff, the guy that sells it has a pic of the FOIL side labeled firewall side and a pic of the BLACK side labeled engine side.

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ine-pad-2.html

This sounds like the way I would like to install it, with the foil side hidden. ALTHOUGH, it seems sorta backwards to me though, are we sound deadening here or heat shielding, or both?

My question is, would it be ok to put the shiny foil side away from the engine? Also, is that the correct way acording to the guys pics and explaination?

edit: My goal is some sound deadening.

sound deadening means that the panel is resonating -- you would then need to put some dampening material on it - say ~~25% coverage - can be done on the interior

if you mean sound reduction, then a good thing to do is to reflect sound waves away at the surface (before they hit the sheet metal panel and make it resonate) - there are also materials that absorb sound as the sound wave moves through the material

since none of these things has been tested - or at least, the tests have never been posted - you are left with some educated guesses on what will be better

obviously Porsche AG's engineers thought a bit of foam was good idea!

    engine sound pad

I installed the "ultimate" pad. Foil side away from engine, towards the cabin. It fit ok, slightly short from side to side and top to bottom. Having a sportomatic, I punched three 1" inch holes and 1 slot for the tank brackets.

My thoughts as I was putting it in were that the sheet metal should really be prepped well and for this pad to do any sound deadening it should be firmly stuck to it.

Since I did not do this, I did not expect much noise reduction. And I didn't! I had some upholstery adheshive, but it didn't really stick good enough.

I drove an hour and a half each way to Mid Ohio on Saturday. Between the wind noise around the doors and the engine noise, it makes for a tough ride. My girlfriend and I spoke a couple times on the trip, she is a really good sport though

I think I will try and address the wind noise, which I think may be more annoying than the engine.

    Thanks, Dan
