    Aluminum Engine Lid . . .

    . . . with stamped numbers.

    Came across this classified . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...d=1#post519260

. . . and noticed the two numbers stamped inside on the center support.

This is only the second lid that I've ever seen that has two numbers stamped into the support. (The first one's on 1059 --- stamped '25'.) I wonder if this means that the panel was originally fitted to a particular car versus sold over-the-counter as a spare or service item.

    Three questions.

    1) Any ideas about what these numbers are? 356s have some body parts stamped with the last few digits of their original vehicle's VIN, so I'm thinking Porsche may have continued the practice --- at least for a time. The odd thing is, I've only seen alu 911 lids with numbers . . .

    2) Can those of you with alu lids check and tell us if you have anything stamped? Also, the vehicle's VIN, or even build-date if you know it.

    3) Has anyone seen, or does anyone have, a steel lid with numbers stamped, anywhere?

I have an aluminum lid & a couple steel lids. I'll take a look later when I return home. I know the lid on my swb deluxe(66/67) has a matching last two digits on it's lid. .....Cliff

Stamping the numbers on the lid center rib was common to all the SWB cars. I guess it helped them keep all the pieces together when the car came out of the paint shop.

I have never seen any numbers on my perfect '71 lid.

As far as I have been able to discern. These pieces (doors , rear lid , fenders ....possibly somewhere on hood ?) were not stamped with the last digits of VIN on all SWB cars. Only on Reutter bodies. And only through 1967 MY on 911 models.

On Reutter built 912's , through 1966 MY I believe. Possibly creeping into 1967 MY . But if so , not through the end of 67 MY.
