    Barrett-Jackson OC, CA 2011

Swung by the Barrett-Jackson Auction, at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, this past Saturday. Not much of an Auction-Guy but . . . it's always fun to see what's up for sale, do a walk-through, chat-up some folks.

Not a lot of excitement at the venue. Big spectacle, lotsa stuff goin' on . . . just not my kinda cars. Ford-this, Chevy-that --- like going through any early-70s shopping center parking lot. 'European cars' were either VWs (including a 21- and a 23-window bus) or high-end exotics serving as props for 'car-care.' Like a black-on-black-on-black 458 (on dubs) shilling for Maguire's. Really? Does anybody actually drive these things?

Anyway, considering the kind of financial throw-weight available in that neighborhood, I felt kinda let-down. I'll be interested to see what SCM reports as to the results. At ten bucks to park, B-J might cover their electric bill.

    My short take . . .

Car I'd most like to take home with me. Seen in the parking lot as I was coming in that morning. Low rear deck spoiler says '70.5. Z/28, RS, silver-on-black, stick. 370 Clydesdales . . . before headers, a hornier Holley, a boinkier bump-stick. A Car to Buy Now if ever there was one . . .

    Very hard-tail.

    L88 'Vette

Gotta love GM power ratings during the hey-day of the horse-power wars.

L88 was rated at 425 hp at 5000 RPM, cost ~$1100.

L89 was rated at 435 hp at 5000 rpm, cost ~$300.

With just those numbers, you can understand why Chevy built and sold 15000 L89 motors, only a couple hundred L88s.

The Deal is that, while the the L88 makes less power at 5k . . . . it makes a sh!t-load more at 6500 --- like, 500+ . . . which is exactly what it was built for.

All this was back when a base 'Vette cost just over $4k.

Shooting clays . . . with a bazooka. Ford 'hemi' Thunderbolt. A/FX = Factory Experimental. I just call 'em 'mentals. Altered wheel-bases, one-off engines/transmissions, swiss-cheesed, acid-dipped, aluminum/fiberglass/cardboard, radio-/heater-/interior-delete --- anything that some really bright/devious minds with serious corporate-encouragement could come up with to make a car lighter or more powerful . . . or just plain scarier. Birth of the 'funny' car.

And I was just looking for a 'cammer' 427 SOHC. Silly me.

Meanwhile . . . back at the beach.

    21-window, no safaris . . .

Go ahead . . . snicker. This is the Queen Bee of the Air-cooleds . . . and $100k cars now --- all day long.

Looking at the interior and the fittings made me think of the Isetta . . . 'cept the steering wheel doesn't swivel around when you get in this one. The simple pleasure I feel, every time I see something so basic . . .

The cammer T-Bolt is f@#!in' bitchin. No snickers here about a 21 Deluxe Samba, I drive one every day.
Still can't wrap my head around $100K+ examples though. This one's too... blingy restomod.

    But wait! --- there's more . . .

    23-window (two more --- in the rear corners) --- with safaris . . .

Think about it. What kind of left-brainer would plunk down his hard-earned for one of these? --- much less share the road --- when Sauri Roamed the Earth. 40 HP --- and all the structural integrity of a fortune cookie.

    But . . . . so . . . . very . . . . lovely.

The colors, the trim, the little detailing . . . the clean tidy straightforwardness of it all . . .

What cars today have this kind of charm?

THAT is more like it... very tasty '62. Correct colors, interior, really tastefully done.

To drive one with grace and style is to be one with the road.

Meaning: aware that any random occurance could leave you first on the scene in an accident.
Takes some adjustment, ridin' over the front wheels. Most of my passengers get kinda spooked.

Any idea what that Beautiful Deathtrap gavelled for?
