Intro and a tech question question about Solex air filters

    Hello all,

I just joined and there was no "new memeber intro" area so I will do it here. I also posted an abreviated version of this post in a solex thread but didn't get any responses so please bear with me.

I'm not a Porsche car owner but I am now a Porsche powered car owner, a dune buggy to be exact.

I just purchased an Allison Daytona dune buggy with a 1960 VW Beetle front floor pan, VW Type 3 disk brake front suspension, and 1965 Porsche 911 rear floor pan with 1965 2.0 flat 6 motor, 1965 911 rear suspension, 1966 901 5 speed tranny.

I know my buggy is probably going to be a travisty to the Porsche enthusists and purists out there. Please keep in mind that I didn't build it, I just purchased it. It was probably built a long time ago when wrecked early 911's were cheaper and more plentiful. I bought it because I wanted a cool little roadster to run around in. I looked at a ton of vintage topless vehicles but everything in my price range had 30+ year old sheet metal with tons of filler and sub-par repaints. I looked at dune buggies because the fiberglass bodies on good ones had original gel coat top finishes that had never seen a repaint and the bodies were straight as an arrow. I bought this one because it had a Porsche driveline meaning it was unique, had more power than a VW, had a 5 speed tranny rather than a VW 4 speed, and had some historical pedigre.

Here are some pics of the buggy:

Now for my first technical question:

The seller said the engine was rebuilt in the last 3 years and has all the updates like hydraulic tensioners, nical seal cylinders, etc. It runs great and has no strange sounds so I would assume this was accurate. It has the original Solex carbs with air horns but no air cleaner base plates and no air cleaner assembly period. Does anyone know where I can get K&N style oval filters like they make for the PMO and webers? If not does anyone have any solution for air filters for my motor. Since the motor is exposed I'd like to get something that has some water protection even though I won't be driving in the rain without a top or wipers anyway.

here are some better pics of the engine and carbs:

Thanks for any help you can provide!
I know as time go on I will have additional questions reguarding my drivetrain. I have already found a wealth of info onthis forum.

    Thx,

    Scotty

Scotty, others may have better ideas, but my suggestion would be individual filter socks on each air horn. Won't keep out water though. Maybe a rain shield like the race cars used, been some threads with pictures on that subject.

The air horn socks will keep crud from getting into the cylinders from that path but crud will have access to the air correction jets and to a lesser degree the vent to the fuel wells in each throttle body (only 1.2 mm in dia, air correction jets have 1.8 mm diameter holes.) Crud can get down into the fuel delivery system from there and possible block the idle jets. Webers are more vulnerable to this than the Solexes are.

Nice looking set of Solexes by the way, fuel pumps and rigid fuel line as well...valuable.
