Well here is my theory. The factory used the grey on the horn grills and the turn signals so as not to clash with the silver trim (blend in) from 65-72. When they went to the black trim on the signals and the horn grills it makes sense to me that they would have then switched to black seals to again blend in and not clash.

That's my theory and I'm stickin to it.

Oh and I bought these with the understanding that they were a very early take off pair because the owner wanted to "update" the car to the 73 look.

Those gray seals are identical to the ones I've found on a couple chrome-grille cars. I am certain they are correct.

I am too. The grills that were on my 70 when I bought her were the original chrome. They had been painted black over the chrome for the same type of update but, they still had the original grey seals.

I had a bit of a disagreement with a well known NOS parts supplier a couple of years ago over the signal lense seals. He tried to tell me they were always black. Of course he was trying to sell me some "NOS" black seals. I tried to tell him that true NOS for the silver trimmed lenses would have been grey until they ran out and superceeded the part with the black seals. He basically told me I didn't know what I was talking about....until I sent him a picture of the NOS signal housings I had....with the grey seals in place....Actually in new condition they are almost a beige color.

No dispute on my part as the ones I took off were blue-gray. They were also disintegrating which is why I didn't try to salvage them. If/when I replace my signal lenses I'll make the effort to save the gray seals. Maybe I'll listen to Elton John while I do so.

If installed properly we shouldn't be able to see the seals from the outside, should we? If that's the case than seal color is less critical.

I think a bigger problem than color is the size in cross-section of the new black seals, which are only half again as thick as the gray seals. I can glue one to the top edge of the grille but it won't hang down to cover the back of that edge. It may take two black seals to accomplish that.

Are there any suppliers of the gray LWB horn grill seal? I was digging through the parts from my '72 and the cut/bevels look just like Michael's.

Just spoke to Eric re seals for 70 & 71....he said the grey he makes are for SWB and are the wrong shape for LWB.
Also that if he had a good original seal , he would reverse engineer.
So if Moparboy72 can send along info, Photos etc perhaps we can get some new versions !
Does anyone have other photos of their LWB grey seals?
    Thanks

I'm gonna blaspheme here, but because the gray seals are compressed between the grilles and the fender lip & flange, why not use a section of SWB seal cut to fit, until and unless an accurate OE replacement is made? Will the Seal Police hunt you down?
