    Original fit radio

    Hi,
My first post on here so be gentle with me

    I have just bought a 1972 2.4s, 1973 model year.

Can anyone tell me how many options were available for original radio fit and what they were please.

The car had a hideous 8 track unit in it at present which just has to go.

    thanks
    Pete

    Pete,
There were a number of Blaupunkt and Becker radios selected from their respective catalogues of the day.
No doubt the radio Politzei here on this forum will give you chapter and verse !
However,be careful in buying a radio in that the US and European bandwidths differed.
The one I have is an aftermarket Becker but in the correct year range for my '71.
If you dont want to cut your door panels you may want to consider 2 x 4" speakers in the original dash speaker panel - pic from Rudy vdv.
These period radios are available from specialists in Germany and Spain - don't have the sites to hand at the moment though.

    HTH,
    Dennis.

    1971 2.2 911 S - now back in the UK - sob!
1975 Carrera Targa (ROW) - missed.
One of us is fast becoming a valuable antique.

There were lots of OE radio options depending on what country it was delivered into. Some countries (Australia for example) chose to fit locally made radios at dealer level. This meant that the punishing import duties were not levied on the radio making the car a bit cheaper. I know that in Australia Pioneer were fitted but i would not be surprised if other non German brands were as well.

A good indication of what was available ex factory in 72 and 73 is in the RS book where all the available radio options are listed.
    For the RS they are:

    • 421 Blaupunkt Koln (automatic) AM/FM/longwave cassette
    • 422 Blaupunkt Bamberg (stereo) AM/FM/longwave cassette
    • 449 Blaupunkt Lubeck AM/FM with cassette
    • 450 Blaupunkt Munster AM/FM (from 48th week)
    • 451 Blaupunkt Ludwigshafen AM/FM
    • 452 Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM/shortwave/ longwave
    • 453 Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM (US band)
    • 454 Blaupunkt Coburg AM 1+2/FM
    • 468 Becker Mexico Olympia 169 (stereo) AM/FM cassette

The book also says that all of these excluding option 450 were available for the 911 generally in the 1973 model year - the exclusion was probably because option 450 was only available from the 48th week.

that said almost any 1972 or 1973 dated radio could be correct, especially a Becker or Blaupunkt, given dealer fittings. I have a 1973 dated Becker Mexico Vollstereo that I put in my car (out of an S class Mercedes) and it looks as if it belongs and I would not be surprised if that radio type (top of the range back then) found its way into new 911's despite the fact that it is not on the options list.

You might be able to find a local GB specialty shop through the DDK forum site or the early 911 register in Porsche club GB.
Good luck and pictures please !!

    Many thanks for the info.

The car was first registered in Italy in Nov 1972 and so is a 1973 MY. It came to the UK at least 10 years ago.

I will have a poke about via the routes suggested.

    Thanks again
