    Weltmeister short shift kit

I just purchased a Weltmeister short shift kit for my 1970 S and was about to have it installed, when I read an article stating that these short shift kits bring the shifting too close together and therefore it is easier to select the wrong gear and/or easier to grind a gear. Is there any truth to this?

Has anyone installed one where I can get some feedback?

    Thanks,

    John

I've never heard a good word spoken about the Weltmeister short shift on a 901 transmission from any of the race prep guru's that I've had close contact with over the last decade. To a man they've indicated that one should use the Porsche short shift which is 'unobtanium' or rebuild the stock mechanism.

There are some more modern solutions available (Wevo, Rennshift, etc) which have their supporters - in fact I use the Wevo. These are invariably more money than the Weltmeister.

Thanks for the help John. I heard similiar statements. It may be time to send it back! Thanks again.

I have a Rennshift in my 69E race car. It is a big improvement over stock, especially wrt the ease/accuracy of engaging first. You can also adjust the spring centering and the amount of throw reduction (I have it on the longer of the two settings).

Downsides, it is very sensitive to setup and CONTINUALLY goes out of adjustment (to the point where I'm tempted to locktight every screw in it). It also uses imperial fasteners which is a PITA in an otherwise metric car.

I suggest installing a 915 shift housing assy. It's a direct bolt on replacement. Remove the 915's rev. lock pawl to allow the shift into 5th gear.

From there, you can install a factory short shifter and other shift accessories, namely this (so much for subtlety).

John, do you have any information or photographs of a factory short shift for a 901/911 transmission? I have never seen any photos of one and am struggling to fit a 915 or similar tower because the guy who signs of FIA papers in my area won't permit this modification and the Weltmeister Stick is just too short to be useful with harness belts and HANS devices.

To be honest Chris, I don't. When I first ventured into this - Porsche - territory in 1998, Gary Emory spoke reverently of factory 901 short shift kits, and quickly added that they were unobtainable then. I think they're kinda like religion - never seen nor touched, but believed.

Could you make your own by taking a standard one and lengthening the lever extending below the pivot which attaches to the ball? That would be hard for them to detect without taking the whole mess apart.

A couple dozen club races on mine with no problems. That and the WEVO coupler make a great combination.
