    Interesting new 911 Racing Book

Michael Keyser of Toad Hall fame will be releasing "Evolution of the Porsche 911 in Competition - 1965-2010" next month.

He plans to be at Rennsport selling them. Looks like a must-have for the library.

I'm considering the purchase of this book and I'd like to get a little feedback on it from anyone that has read it. I have a pretty extensive library of Porsche books and I would like to know if this book covers any new ground. I'm particularly interested in the cars that have seen somewhat less coverage in prior books, such as the 911s raced between 1970 and 1972, the 911SC/RS, etc. I have plenty of material on the RSRs, the turbo cars, etc. and I'm not particularily interested in the more recent offerings like the various Cup cars, GT3 variations, etc.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Hopefully this will come out in a regular edition that is less expensive.

I own it. It's more of a coffee-table book than a reference book. The printing and binding are first-rate.

I like mine because I bought it from Keyser at R-R IV (the first copy that he sold there). He signed his page; Barth signed his intro page; Singer signed his intro page. Then I took it through the autograph line and all of the drivers signed it.

Needless to say, I really like my copy of the book...

I can see why you would like that.

Is there any decent coverage of the 911ST or 911SC/RS?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Jeff, define "decent." They are in the book, but it's a picture book.

The Randy Leffingwell book should be out soon. That's the one you'll need to buy. It'll be the most comprehensive book on Porsche racing - ever. It'll be published by David Bull so you know it'll be a quality book - and expensive.

Good question, I suppose I should have clarified what I meant. The majority of the photos of ST-era cars are shots of the cars taken while participating in various races. They tend to be of poor quality and offer little or no detail shots of the engine compartment, interior, trunk area, etc. There are a few SC/RS photos out there but those tend to focus on the rally-prepared cars and they offer very few details. I'm trying to document the details of how the cars were initially built by Porsche, not how they looked in the middle of a race season after they'd been modified to death.

Likewise, what has been written about them is somewhat sketchy, and sometimes contradictory. I was hoping for a fresh look at the cars, not a repeat of the incomplete, often wrong, descriptions from other books.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

This is a large, handsome, well-captioned coffee-table book of very nice period action shots covering the gamut of racing 911's. Not a detailed reference book.
